I don’t know who’ll be looking at this storepage for reviews when it’s delisted, but I bought og Dark Souls a decade ago, even bought a gamepad specifically for it, because everyone said it was awful with mouse and keyboard. But dropped it anyway after 1/3rd of the game.
Came back to it last month and breezed through it with m+k and enjoyed it immensely.
The trick, as it turned out, was to not even try to play fair. It's strongest part is the atmosphere, so I overpowered my character with sorcery and cheesed my way through. The game allows you to, it’s surprisingly flexible overall.
You can play for the challenge, sure, I applaud those who do, but that takes a certain kind of mindset and patience for which my ADD-brain is unfit for.
David & Goliath is a great analogy for it. You can approach it like a story about overcoming overwhelming odds or as a story about a guy who brought a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gun (well, a sling) to a swordfight.

What a nice little game!
Mood and atmosphere is just superb and will stick with me for a while.
Storywise it's, well, *fragmented* and leans heavily on meta elements, so it successfully tickles my imagination and makes me want to see more of its world, so I wishlisted the author's next game right after finishing this one.
Had a few issues with a maze qualities of the game, mainly inadvertently locking myself in the office building without items needed to get out of it, and platforming in the last level was a bit frustrating, but even that plays out thematically, so it's alright.

Gunplay is so unsatisfying that I don't want to kill anybody, even without the game telling me it's bad afterwards

I don't mean to sound pretentious, but this game is a beautiful piece of art.
Art in a sense how it explores it's ideas and conveys them to it's audience. How it engages in a meaningful dialogue on it's subject and philosophy instead of telling you how to feel or spelling everything out for you. How it is masterfully written, presented and paced. How it builds unique strange world that is not a backdrop but a crucial part of the narrative designed to constantly spark your imagination.
Sure, you can try and pick it apart to complain about individual elements like surprisingly competent and complex but ultimately useless combat and rpg systems, but even it's meta-narrative suggests player to relax and let it all in and take a broader perspective.

I don't normally write steam reviews, but I'm just too angry with a "Mixed" rating for this masterpiece and pointless comparisons with Planescape Torment, so here it is.
