I've been playing this game on and off since launch. All I can say is that Hello Games took a mess of a game and turned it into something miraculous. So many free updates and the ability to play in VR is awesome.

I grew up playing Secret of Mana and other Square games on the SNES and played the English fan translation of what is now called Trials of Mana in the late 90s or early 2000's. I recently played the Mana Collection on the Nintendo Switch. When I learned they were making a remake/remaster of Trials of Mana I was both excited and worried. Square had botched the Secret of Mana remake. I played the demo of ToM when it was released and it seemed the updated graphics looked great and colorful and the gameplay/fight system had been updated, even though it seemed simple compared to the games of today. Now that I have the full game, it seems like they've faithfully transferred the game to current gen. The overall story is the same, the maps seem to be the same but with additions to explore. There is also new post-game content. If you love the Square RPGs of the 90's, then you will love this, even if you haven't played any of the Mana games. Now I'm just waiting on a Chrono Trigger remake in the same vein as this remake.

My only complaint is how simple the combat is, the poor voice acting, and what they did with Charlotte's speech (replacing R's with W's to speak like a baby.

I feel like this game was a step backwards. While the shooting elements are greatly improved, the story and RPG elements aren't up to par. Some of my favorite parts of the previous games were being able to play your character the way you wanted. That's not really an option in this game. When talking to NPCs, your choices of what to say have been reduced. I'm not sure if this was because of the choice to voice the protagonist or what. The settlement building seems like a waste of time and isn't what I want in a Fallout game. I found it dreadfully boring compared to F03 and F0:NV. Hopefully the next numbered game will return to its roots.
