Enjoyed it until the unskippable 20+ minutes of credits. I'm not here to waste my time sucking your ♥♥♥♥, Eidos. I've already given you my money.

Persistent log-in screen that interrupts gameplay is an automatic fail.

Keybinding is asinine. It's not possible to bind mouse movement axes to vehicle controls, even though mouse axes are bound *by default* to some controls. WTF. Doing so requires editing a txt file. Failure.

FOV is painfully low and cannot be adjusted without the use of third party tools.

Mario escort missions are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ excruciating slog. ♥♥♥♥ mario. He is too dumb to live. I want to rip off his head and ♥♥♥♥ down his throat while his grandmother is fed through a wood chipper. Square enix should be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ashamed for such obnoxious ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ missions with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ obnoxious character. ♥♥♥♥ Mario. ♥♥♥♥ Squeenix.

Mario is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ infurating that I have to go around shooting civilians in the head for an hour to cool off.

Battlezone is a game that was way ahead of its time when it was first released in 1998. It seamlessly blended FPS and RTS gameplay in a way that has yet to be matched by another game (apart from the sequel: BZII). Not only can the player build and direct units in battle, but they can participate directly in those battles themselves.

I remember playing Battlezone consistently for several years, until I got my hands on Battlezone II: Combat Commander. My grades suffered because of this obsession. To see that it had been remastered was exciting. At only 15 dollars (20% off sale), it was an easy impulse purchase.

Rebellion has done a swell job of remastering this game. The gameplay is essentially the same as it was in 1998 (apart from bug fixes). Everything just feels right. With the substantial graphical overhaul, the style of the game has been neatly retained. There is no dissonance between my nostalgic memories of the original and the improved fidelity of this remaster.

The story is an incredibly captivating Cold War era sci-fi alternate history. The Americans and the Soviets battle across the solar system in a race to gather "bio-metal" and to discover its mysterious origin. There are two campaigns; one from the American perspective, and the other from the Soviet perspective.

Rebellion has also bolstered the mod support of the game with Steam Workshop integration and mod tools. Mods from the original can also be ported into the remaster. I'm eager to see what the community can do with this new opportunity.

I look forward to playing this for years to come.

PS: the original cheat codes still work!
