I figured Outlast would be the next Amnesia, as in it would be a horror game that understood horror comes from atmosphere and tension rather than just loud spooky monsters. I was partially right, as Outlast uses the same "run don't fight" style as Amnesia, but there's something really missing from that formula that Amnesia had but Outlast doesn't, and I couldn't really place it. Outlast is not scary, sort of depressingly un-scary, in that the big guy following you who requires you to hide shows up so often that he loses his impact after like the third time, and by the end is much more annoying than scary.
Speaking of the end, it comes really quickly, as Steam says i had just under 4 hours after the ending, and that might be inflated as I died an awful lot and looked for all the collectibles.
Outlast also has an odd way of giving objectives, as the hospital is incredibly linear, yet the game does a bad job of telling you where you can and can't go, leading to unnecessary deaths when running from enemies.
The important part of this game is the atmosphere, which, while solid, is also very easily broken as the game lurches between plot development and jump scares. Yeah, there are a few jump scares, but those are just startling, not scary. The game's atmosphere is sort of ruined whenever certain characters show up like the doctor who speaks in an oddly dissonant voice while he murders you, and the two naked inmates who constantly show up to blind the player with a frontal assault while talking about how they're going to eat you, but you only have to run from them in one segment and thats it.
The biggest problem with Outlast is that it has some good stuff, but it downplays all of it in an attempt to create an atmospheric horror experience, but fails so spectacularly at it that there is not much to recommend.

A game where a cyborg ninja cuts other cyborg ninjas in half to drink the Gatorade in their spines.
