About 15 years ago the first game came out and it has been in my top three games since. I played through this one pretty quick but i'm sure i'll go back to it soon enough for another play-through. This one feels like it finally finished the story I started all that time ago.
That means if you haven't played the first game or the VR game that came out, this game starts with a recap of the story so far but you should really just go play the first game at least. This game takes place directly after the VR game so if you don't have a means to play it, go watch a non-commentary play-through of it. Even though they recap the story, lots of characters make jokes about actions you made in the previous games.
You get a lot of abilities from the start in this, which makes sense from a story side, but it also means you have a lot to work with right from the start instead of building on powers a zone at a time in the first game. I beat the game before a bunch of achievement/collectible changes were made so I can't speak much to the state of them. Side missions were similar to the first game so no problems there, collecting all the other items is supposed to be less tedious now but I wasn't super interested in 100% completion.
TLDR: Play the first game, play/watch the VR game, Play this one. They all go on sale enough to get your moneys worth of story and are worth playing if you like 3D platformers.

Solid game. Build your own hacker and things get pretty easy.
