Incredible game, such a balm for the soul. I would do anything for Boro.

DNF.

The game is BEAUTIFUL and the performance is fantastic, but I feel like it suffers from open world pacing problems despite not being open world. After 40 hours of gameplay, I don't feel like I've accomplished anything at all.

Combat as a mage feels frustrating because, even if you have a warrior in your party, no one generates aggro other than you aside from a Taunt ability that feels like it lasts 3 seconds.

Bioware have made a longstanding reputation for being the studio that gives us games where choices have consequences and real meaning, the settings and factions have deep history and are often morally grey which makes them so much more intriguing than other games. But I feel like this game has diluted that entirely.

Your previous choices don't matter, we don't know what happened to our Warden, what happened to Hawke, whether Morrigan has a son or not. We still have meaningless cameos from characters who don't comment on our previous MCs because they can't do that in a way that will always make sense. You can't walk up to your companions and have a conversation or ask them about themselves unless you've hit a story beat either - let me ask Davrin about the wardens, or Lucanis about the Crows. I was trying to romance Lucanis but he seems more interested in Neve than Rook ??

You can be in the slavery capital of the world and there are no reactions to you being an elf or any mentions of slavery because Tevinter are good guys now. You can be a Qunari in a city occupied by a Qunari invading force and no one cares. Elves are no longer siding with Solas as mentioned in Trespasser (because why would they, they aren't being discriminated against anymore ??)

I wish I could give this a mixed review, but playing this just makes me want to replay DA2 or Inquisition instead - sure, not as pretty to look at, but the writing is better and the combat is fun. I probably won't come back to this unless there's a substantial content patch, unfortunately.

TL:DR; There's a good game here but it needs some polish.

I feel I got my money's worth with this game, and I want to continue playing, but there are just a couple things that make me want to wait before diving back in:

- I kept trying to hover over UI elements to get more info, but nothing popped up.
- I felt like I was constantly fighting against the storage system. I was excited when I finally learned how to build a storehouse, but disappointed to find I still could only store 1 type of resource in it. (Also, baffled that I could limit the amount stored, but couldn't allocate that space to another resource)
- It takes so long for the tribespeople to do anything. I don't mind a slow pace, but it felt like I spent most of my time playing at max speed waiting for the resource I needed to pop up in storage so I could do the thing I wanted to do.
- Performance was a little iffy - I played on medium settings and still had some stutters with a 3080 and an i9-9900K

Besides all of that, I enjoy the game and I feel the itch to make a beautiful settlement. I'll maybe just hold off for a while and wait for the patches to come in.

Early Access Review
Book of Travels is a beautiful game where, for once, it's a real joy when you run into other people online. It absolutely doesn't hold your hand, so be prepared to take notes as you play!

I'm really excited to see where the development team take it throughout the early access phase.

Remember when Cyberpunk was the most disappointing AAA launch? Big oof. I feel for the devs, honestly.

Early Access Review
Obviously early access and rough around the edges, but I've not had any game-breaking issues so far (in singleplayer campaigns, anyway). There's plenty of content and I'm really enjoying it; Larian are filling the RPG hole left behind after playing Dragon Age and Pillars of Eternity, and I'm unbelievably excited to follow this game to full release.

Edit: as of August 2023 this game has ruined my life, larian please give me more BG3

Great game, has come a long way since a buggy launch. They removed RedShell as far as I'm aware, and now everyone's just mad because they have a 1 in 10 chance of getting a feeeemale if they play specific factions.

Not usually a fan of isometric-style RPGs, and I've never played Bastion, but holy crap this game is beautiful in every way.
