this is the game you turn on, eliminate all distractions, and get lost in.

I am writing this review because I want this game to get better. Stepping back into Cities Skylines 1 felt like going back in time, but that game has an unbelievable amount of content and is very tuned in terms of its difficulty and gameplay. This game on the surface is very refined and is a step up from the original. However, it's still very bug-ridden and hacky. The land value bug is one example among many that forces the player to be in this forever loop of density increasing and people being upset that "the rent is too high" which is hard to tell if it was really supposed to be bug or not, which is how I feel about a lot of these game mechanics. "Is this really a bug or did they do this on purpose, am I wrong?" is not a very rewarding feeling as a player. In Cities Skylines 1, you could hover over the icons on buildings with issues and it would explain in a tooltip what this status indicator means and common ways to fix it. In this game it just shows you the status. It's not very clear how to remediate the various issues citizens have. Performance is also a drag. 5950x, 3080ti, 64GB of RAM should be PLENTY but even at medium settings it CHUGS at certain points. When placing a building and it automatically turns on that info overlay, it usually slams my frames to near 20. I could go on and on about the various rough-around-the-edges aspects of this game, but their decision to pump the brakes on regular patching is extremely disappointing. This game still has a LOT of work to be done before I'd call it "complete" and I understand that a lot of people were extremely hateful and out of pocket when criticizing this game, but the majority of us are rightly disappointed at this release. It has some FANTASTIC improvements over the original. I found myself missing building upgrades or the upgraded road tools in Cities Skylines 1. It just really needs more time in the oven. I really wanted to give this game the benefit of the doubt but I can no longer overlook the glaring issues still in this build almost 6 months after release.

Please Colossal Order, start regular patches again. This game is a diamond in the rough, please keep polishing it.

Update 1/9/2024

This game is great now that mods are starting to catch up. I just don't think people were as prepared for the power of this game and after the mod support was added, things are great. If you enjoy a very technical city builder, this game is for you.

One of the things my girlfriend and I do together is watch live gaming events like Summer Games Fest and State of Play whenever they happen, the latter of which is where I first saw this game. I downloaded the demo when it was available and was instantly hooked on the sound design and gameplay. Coming from the developers of Tetris Effect, I expected no less, However they knocked this one out of the park. The music reminds me of the music from Bit.TRIP Runner (or Runner 1), where the music starts off as a simple melody and as you progress through the level, the music grows more and more complex. I also really dig the level editor and online map element which is such a smart way to add replay value and creativity to a game.

I adore this game, it's so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ charming. The gameplay loop may be a bit redundant for some, but it has some of the most drop dead gorgeous environments in gaming. I'm really excited for Alan Wake 2.
