I saw this pop up under New Releases and Steam told me it was similar to Rust and Satisfactory, two games I adore. As I read some reviews they also mentioned Rust. That sold me. Just to note, I have about 10k hours in Rust (I'm a degenerate) so all the mentions about it really pulled me in.

As others have said, it's got the visuals of Animal Crossing and some of the items/places of interest like Rust. For the first 30-60 minutes I was hooked. I had a great time fishing, picking berries, and simply chatting with others on an official server. This was the honeymoon phase.

After I saved enough for a tent I immediately went to place it. There was not a single place nearby to carve out as my own. I ended up just running until there was free space which happened to be the snow. This was my first mistake. In the snow biome you lose energy faster. There were also many tiny rivers to cross which also ate up energy. There were no vendors near me so I had to try and get my energy up before heading back to Sgt Lake. No berries in snow? No problem, I'll kill animals and cook them. BUT WAIT, you can't simply make a fire. You need to buy them from a vendor. After dying once or twice I made it to the safe zone and bought what I needed. I had to stop and fish for a bit again to get more cash which was slightly annoying.

Back at my tent I now had a workbench, container, and campfire outside. I took my trusty axe to chop trees down to start working on converting the tent to a cabin. The time it takes to chop one tree is insane. Also since I'm in the snow I died to no energy 5-6 times chopping before I had enough wood. It was a frustrating experience.

That was all behind me though and I thought I was on the right path. I set out for the opposite side of the map to find different types of fish to get a collar. I took a tent with me so I would have another spawn point. Imagine my surprise when I can't place another tent because I haven't purchased another slot for a home. My fishing trip turned into a one way trip. I did meet someone really helpful outside of their home. We said goodbye and I ran the wrong way and into their turret. I'm certain they would have saved everything for me but there's no global chat so all was lost.

After getting home I thought I'd just destroy my tent and start over elsewhere. No, you can't abandon your tent. This is your home and you better love it.

Rust has battle hardened me but after this Longvinter session I just logged out. You don't have much freedom and guides aren't clear for new players. I'll revisit it down the line but right now I think I'm done.
