This game teaches you an important lesson: the best strategy for surviving the end of the world is to shoot first and ask no questions.

Read "Roadside Picnic" by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky before you play this game; you'll appreciate just how well the devs nailed the atmosphere in this title.

Listening to the thunderstorm outside of the car while figuring out which way to drive through the Zone, and going through looted treasures after a long run while the radio plays in the background, were some of the most memorable moments I've had in a video game.

The art direction is on point, and the gameplay loop of upgrading your car and surviving an ever-increasing list of anomalies feels polished and fun. This game finds creative ways to make you stressed but does so in such a natural and unscripted way that it just begs admiration. Sometimes, I would stray too far from the car in the dark searching for loot and felt like I had to fire a round with the flare gun just for my own sanity. I also really enjoyed the way the game teases you with loot as the extraction deadline grows near. The game does its best to introduce resource sinks as you discover new areas and crafting materials. You can really tell progression was paid attention to during development.

I have only two complaints: the campaign felt a little short, and performance definitely needs work. Finishing the story in 40 hours and seeing FPS occasionally drop to 50 on a 3080ti+5800X3D both made me wince a little.

Despite that, I recommend this game at asking price and would say it's an absolute steal at a discount.
