Easily the best survival game I've played since Valheim. I regret sleeping on this title for so long even though the premise interested me when it first launched. A part of me is glad I waited because now I get to enjoy it as a complete package rather than waiting for content to release over time. I haven't been this excited to play a game in a while and I really can't wait to play Grounded 2 once I'm finished with this game completely.

I bought this game hoping for an open world survival game with a fairly linear story so I could choose whether or not I wanted to advance the plot and have some level of guidance or spend time exploring the world. This game nailed that balance perfectly. There's always some objective to do if that's what you want but otherwise the game often encourages you to sprawl out across the lawn and discover things organically. The exploration harkens back to the Obsidian days of old. If you are curious and care to explore the world you will be rewarded. Every. Damn. Time. The game has so much stuff to see and do. I could rave about all the various features and mechanics that make me surprised newer survival titles haven't borrowed from Grounded but I will say that the game is very thoughtful in making the boring elements of base building and resource management as painless as possible so you can spend more time in the world doing what you enjoy.

I will also say this is a game that does difficulty right which seems very rare nowadays. Our friend group started on Whoa (Hard) difficulty and it genuinely makes you fearful of some of the larger foes in the game. You learn to become avoidant and plan out your trek away from your base. You also learn when you're starting out as a new player where the safer spots are and where to avoid. It gives you a sense that you're actually surviving in the world and eventually you learn to adapt and conquer these challenges. That being said, the game also does a great job of never making you too comfortable. Just when you feel confident in your ability to fight something like Bombadier Beetles, Stinkbugs, and Orb Weaver Spiders, the story progression introduces new threats and challenges to humble you. Another nice touch is the game tends to scale enemy damage and health with the amount of players actively on the server so it's not just a complete cakewalk when you get your friends involved. If you are unprepared for a fight you walk into and you choose to aggro a large insect anyways there's a strong chance you will die even with a group. You still have to play smart and help each other out in fights and the emphasis on teamwork and planning makes the co-op that much more fun to me.

I bought this on sale but having played it I would say it's very easily worth the $40 asking price. Over 70+ hours into the game and there's still tons of content, places to explore, and things to do. It's a great game I would recommend to anyone.

Willing to change my review once the issue gets fixed but this game crashes constantly. I've been able to complete 2 missions in their entirety without the game completely closing and giving me a fatal crash error message.

It's frustrating because I think this game is very fun and enjoyable. I like what they're doing with the Helldivers formula but it's literally unplayable and when you host a game there's no way to join back in once you've been ejected from the game. This wouldn't be such a miserable experience if they had implemented a way to rejoin but instead everyone else gets kicked out of the lobby instead of assigning a new host which to me is a massive oversight when making an online game of this nature. For all the design queues they've borrowed from Helldivers 2, you'd think that a rejoin feature would be one of them.

Avoid for now

Way more fun than it has any right to be for $16. It's like a hyper-chaotic mix of Battlefield and Red Orchestra.

My only gripe is the Stormtrooper and Specialist classes are way too overpowered with the LMG, SMG, and Auto-Rifle options. Automatic weapons that can be hipfired and carried around without movement penalty. They are just so ridiculous and oppresive to play against in a game with mounted machineguns and bolt-action rifles. You're basically a one-man army that can decimate an entire push when using one. I know that historically yes, the Hotchkiss, Lewis Gun, Madsen, Chauchaut, and MP18 were deployed in the war but the implementation of them here is just way too lopsided. ADS, hipfire spread while walking/ strafing, and movement speed should have been affected in a much more negative way for the Hotchkiss, Madsen, Lewis Gun, and Chauchaut to balance them and promote holding chokepoints. Frankly the MP18 shouldn't really be in the game. 4,000 were used across the entire war and it's just a huge balance issue.

The sound design is so horrendous in this game it's surprising the people who made The Finals and were former DICE devs created this game. It's seriously so egregious. You can't hear anyone near you whether that be crouching, walking, or running. I'm not asking for a game like Hunt: Showdown or Rainbow Six Siege in terms of spatial awareness and directional audio but this seriously makes Call of Duty's sound design seem like a stroke of genius.

EDIT: They claimed they "fixed" the sound design and it got worse. You also now disconnect from matches frequently.

Not enough people are talking about this game. The art style and character design is mosaic-like and incredible, The music is on-par with The Elder Scrolls series, the combat feels visceral, engaging, and weighty in a way that parallels and often exceeds FromSoftware titles, the game’s difficulty scales very well with multiple players and remains challenging on high difficulty, the loot and upgrade system rivals that of Diablo, and the cutscenes and voice acting are all top-notch.

It’s hard to say who this game wouldn’t appeal to. I’m wholly impressed by this game as a complete package. I don’t have any complaints. Yes this game is probably more money than most Early Access titles but you’d also be mistaken for thinking this isn’t a complete product. There’s tons of content here and I’ve only encountered one bug where I got stuck in a spot I probably wasn’t supposed to be and had to reload the game. For full transparency I also had a friend that could not get past the Prologue if he skipped the cutscenes. While re-doing the Prologue is annoying, I don’t find any of this deal breaking. We were able to diagnose our own workarounds without seeking help online and going forward we didn’t experience an issue again.

I will say performance-wise, when you transition from large world map areas such as the main area of Sacrament to other areas of the map, there is a pretty noticeable framerate drop but I give this game a pass for omitting a loading screen and doing so in areas with little to no combat. I believe the optimization will get better on full release and is not as bad for me personally as some reviewers claim. I have an i7 11700f and an RX 6900 XT and I play on recommended settings at 1440p with no framerate issues except for the transition areas.

There’s been a pretty big gap in quality co-op games that are also just fun single player experiences and this game excels in both regards. If the price is holding you back wait for a sale but know that you’re missing out! I see that a lot of negative reviews are centered around the bugs and optimization but this game is obviously Early Access and my personal experience despite that has been very pleasant.

No class-locked servers, trying to capture Warzone's market by making a worse version of Warzone, obnoxious skins for soldiers and vehicles. 2042 gunplay and worse destruction than BFV and BF1.

This game isn't for Battlefield fans and it isn't for whatever market they tried to entice.

As a result it's just a less-good Battlefield and a less-good Warzone clone.

This game has the honor of being better than Delta Force and BF2042 although that isn't a high bar.

Great game with some of the best maps, weapons, and game modes in the entire BF franchise. Kind of a shame this game didn't get more attention at launch.

The single player is very fun. Multiplayer is terrific and active if you change the BattleLog filter to allow EU. There seems to be a German server or 2 that's always popping off all weekend.

For those in the review comments complaining about logging in through BattleLog on PC: that is how you connected to BF3, BF4, and BF Hardline. It's not unique to Hardline and it was actually preferred so you could check your challenges, stats, and look at servers independent of the game. There was even an app on your phone where you could edit these things. I wish they'd bring it back to modern BF titles.
