I agree that the puzzles sometimes have very poor design. I wouldn't say the games are great, but I have enjoyed them for the environments and atmosphere. I also give the dev credit for adhering to the source material, which I find important.
Nemesis has the same gameplay for better or worse, and also many interesting environments to explore. I can't of any aesthetic reason that Nemesis would feel that different--perhaps it was a technical issue?
Jack the Ripper is the only other one I've played, and I thought it stood apart from those two in that the gameplay was a lot worse, even outright buggy, and the environments were almost entirely drab and uninteresting. Combined with the subject matter which is interesting on its own, its not what I usually enjoy in an Adventure game.
