On June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War ⚔️, the U.S. Navy ship USS Liberty 🚢 was attacked by forces from Israel 🇮🇱 while in international waters 🌊 near Arish 🇪🇬. Israeli jets ✈️ and torpedo boats 🚤 struck the ship, killing 34 crew members 💔 and wounding 171 🏥. The vessel was heavily damaged but survived 🚢.

Israel apologized, stating the ship was mistaken for an Egyptian vessel 😔. U.S. and Israeli investigations concluded it was a tragic error 📄. Some survivors, however, have long argued the attack was deliberate 🤔🔥. Israel later paid millions in compensation 💵. The incident remains controversial and debated decades later 📚🗣️.
