Dunderbeck is a surreal and wonderfully entertaining game. The inventory management is very well done yet frantic and kept me on my toes the entire time. Having to juggle collecting resources as they pass on the floor with wanting to collect everything was a losing battle so very quickly I had to ask myself, "do I really need 30 rat meats and a dozen bones?" Obviously the answer was yes but nonetheless into the trash they went.

Exploration and discovery is a big part of this game and its very fun to experiment with what to eat what to use as a weapon and what crafts into what. I did have an issue where the Kill the Rat King quest wouldn't complete and I was able to kill him mulitple times by returning to his dungeon. That and they wouldn't actually give me the money from collecting the Rat King crown, but thats okay because you can sell Glitter for $18 a vial.

Overall, I'm very excited to see where this game goes and I will be telling everyone about how cool it is.

A very fun and addictive roguelite with a very fast pace playstyle. While the harder difficulties do seem very hard to pass without specific builds they are the most fun as they add the most mechanics and skill checks. Some foods are very clearly stronger than others and it would be nice to see some work on balancing them out, I'm looking at you Oranges. Giving the difficulties more distinct changes besides the helper count and belt speed would help to make the gameplay more interesting as you continue to play, or you could add a separate ramping modifier mode like ascensions in Slay the Spire or other similar games.

Anyway, its a great game and I can't wait to see its development.

Edit: I will be leaving the original review up for posterity. Please read the update for new context.

The new update was a mistake. Not only does the game run worse, but the UI is a new kind of terrible and the servers are just as bad if not worse than they've ever been. Plus the monetization and design choices have been trending from anti-consumer to straight up predatory. One of my favorite games in a long time and this update has been an unfortunate step in the wrong direction.

Update: Over the last year since the 1886 update came out the devs have rectified many of the issues they produced in with the update. Many bug fixes and balance patches have made the game much better since then. At current update while the devs still make "interesting" decisions the game is in a very good state and I would reccomend any who were turned off by the 1886 update to give it another chance.

Great game so far. One of the best survival games I've played in a long time. Has a good foundation for future content and they nailed the theme perfectly. All the small mechanics the game has implemented come together to create a really enjoyable experience.

Currently, I would say that it is slightly too easy to survive, the nightly attacks are too easy to beat and base defenses don't really serve a purpose. It would be cool if the night attacks were more like waves that came to attack your base so the traps felt more worthwhile, or something similar.
