7 hours in and the game just isn't connecting with me. The story has mostly been told through cutscenes that are staged out like stage plays shoved into a Disney animated feature. Chock full of over-exaggerated movements and facial expressions on top of one of the cheesiest scripts I've ever seen. This kept me from establishing immersion the entire time, but anime fans might find this favorable.
If the game felt mechanically interesting, I might forgive other factors but every fight felt hinged on successfully executing multiple successive quick time events and it never feels like the combat has any variety or really anything engaging as a result. Out of combat, the game feels like I'm in menus way too much. I could say that I just don't like RPGs, but I've played other pretty large scale RPGs and felt pretty satisfied.
On a positive note the artwork and music in this game are extraordinarily top notch and I quite wish this level of both were attached to some other game so I felt like I could enjoy the entire thing.
