UPDATE: It's been like almost a year since this game came out and I've decided to change my review from recommended to not recommended because honestly, as someone who loves all the previous games, Veilguard is such a disappointment. And I should've not recommended from the start, but I was biased and felt bad for downvoting (esp since Dragon Age are my favorite games) :(

If you’re just looking for some fun RPG to play, I recommend it. If you’re looking for Dragon Age, I do not recommend it.

First, I’ll just say that my review is mostly comparing Veilguard to the previous games and I might be a little biased for recommending it after all that I said

After getting 100% completion, I will say I enjoyed playing through the game just like any other RPG which is why I'm going to recommend it + it's a continuation(?) of what happened at the end of DA:I/Trespasser and kind of closure to see the ending to it. However, I'm obviously going to compare the game to its previous ones. I honestly didn't feel like the game was Dragon Age. If you are expecting that, then I do not recommend the game. I know Veilguard will be someone's first Dragon Age and I do hope you play the other games because it is just so different compared to Veilguard and of course, getting to know Solas :^)

Game is beautiful. Really liked the locations we could go to. Wasn’t as open-world as DA:I which I’m fine with.

Writing/Dialogue is not as good as the other games. Feels like our choices didn’t really matter. I'm not someone that chooses evil choices, but there definitely wasn't really any choices/consequences involving being evil. Was definitely pretty cringe at times. There was a lot of good guy, bad guy talk. very just black and white like you would think people would be a bit skeptical about me leading them as a Crow since the factions could have a “dark side” to them, but I'm instantly painted as a good guy for the whole game. and the whole oh we're not going to get anywhere until everyone stops getting distracted and solves their own problems felt a bit weird when that cutscene was being played.

The combat’s pretty fun, but it does get pretty repetitive especially since you can only have 3 abilities + your ult equipped. The world bosses were just the same 3 or 4 bosses but renamed/reskinned at a higher level

I like the companions, even though it took me a bit to like some of them. I don’t think I like any of them better than anyone from the other games though. Companions in the other DAs just hit differently :^) The banter in the other games is definitely better.

I don’t know if it’s cause I romanced Lucanis, but the romance was not really good imo especially compared to the other games. It didn't really feel like I was romancing anyone until the last part of the game before the big fight. Don't know if it's different for other companions

I wish it was more dark fantasy-like like origins and 2. spoilers from origins and 2 if you care lol in origins, the start for female city elf, you literally get taken by humans on your wedding day because they want you as a plaything and think they can do whatever they want to elves. As a noble human, you and your family literally gets betrayed by someone you think is a friend and your parents get killed and then you can get your revenge on him later in the game. In Dragon Age 2, your brother or sister dies at the start, then the surviving one could end up dying depending on your choices..your mom literally gets murdered by some guy wanting to recreate his love And there's a lot more examples and probably better ones than the ones I said but you get the idea. Your race/magic/faction doesn't really matter in this game like it did in the other games. All the struggles, the trouble in the world, the dark side of things just seemed to have disappeared.

I’ve always loved the lore in Dragon Age. Just seeing little things like notes with references to things that happened in the previous games always made me happy. I don’t think Veilguard really had any of this. If it did, I guess I didn’t notice. I also loved seeing characters from previous games show up in the others. Veilguard had a few characters show up which was nice and I was excited to see them. For example, Cullen. In Origins, he was a cowardly Templar hiding in a magic shield bubble thing at the mage tower when it was being attacked with a little bit of dialogue you can have with him. In 2, he’s like a (?) Templar captain (?) knight captain (?) and you have more dialogue with him and he’s more involved in the main story. In Inquisition, he’s the Knight Commander and you can romance him. Idk I just really love stuff like that and the character development we saw throughout the games.

Anyways, I’m just blabbering at this point lol

I’ve replayed all the games a bunch. I would say origins and 2 probably 5 or more times and Inquisition less than 5. Had the games on Origins/EA app lol was happy when they finally released all of them on Steam. However, I don’t know if I would ever replay this. Maybe if I get really bored

TLDR;
As someone who loves Dragon Age, the game is disappointing. I don’t feel like I played a Dragon Age game, but I still thought It was an enjoyable experience just like any other RPG.

need dreadwolf the veilguard now :(

(had a crashing issue when entering this one eluvian in the trespasser dlc and tried a bunch of things to fix it and only thing that worked was pressing alt+enter when entering which would make your game windowed. can alt+enter again to make it fullscreen once you see the party selection screen)
