العبارة اليونانية الأكثر شهرة عن حصان طروادة تأتي من "الإنيادة" لفيرجيل، وهو شاعر روماني. العبارة "Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes" تُترجم إلى "أخشى الإغريق حتى عندما يجلبون الهدايا". في الأساطير اليونانية، كان حصان طروادة هدية ظاهرية سلمية تركها الإغريق للطرواديين، لكنها كانت تحتوي على جنود إغريق مختبئين في الداخل. العبارة تعكس عدم الثقة في هدايا الأعداء، مذكّرة بأن حتى الهدية يمكن أن تكون فخًا. إذا كنت تبحث عن اقتباس يُنسب مباشرة إلى الإغريق القدماء، فإن العبارة المنسوبة إلى لاكون في فيرجيل تعمل كتذكير دائم بعدم الثقة الاستراتيجية.
