You could also try nuking the shadow quality in cs2, usually shadows and lighting are the ones that cause most lag. I don't know much about source 2 so thats the best I can do.

You can't edit the .dat files directly. You'll have to edit the .txt and change the <clr> tags to change the colors. Take a look at my guide for instructions on compiling the captions after you've edited the .txt file.
