I am... conflicted. On Afterimages. If I could give it a mixed review, I certainly would, but I feel like despite me giving it a negative review, I can't say in good faith you shouldn't buy it. It kind of just depends on how much you want more until then.

The Homecoming chapter is honestly just amazing, and is the main thing bringing this DLC package to life. I didn't think I cared much about Sofia, but this chapter made me deeply feel for her and her trauma, and despite being tied to the first ending, Sofia was a character that never fully got explored in the main game, so it felt really good to see her get a nice ending here. However, my biggest problem with this chapter is that its absurdly short, and the pacing feels a little too quick. I would've liked to see one or two more major scenes at least. It has a fun minigame though, and the clickclock shorts are funny!

The Sparks chapter... is where this entire DLC falls apart. Before even getting into the story, the gameplay here is just the worst of any Until Then chapter by a huge mile. There are no real minigames except this one weird Danganronpa style "shoot the right word" minigame that is spammed, and is honestly just annoying rather than fun. Beyond that, you barely utilize tech beyond the basic group chats, and while it is fun to have the silly gifs, thats about all this chapter brings to the table in terms of new.

Then there's the story.
Oh boy, the story. The characters. Man.

The best way I can describe this chapter is that it feels like fanfiction, Marc and Nicole barely feel like their usual selves, and this takes place during the first ending timeline, which means that everything that happens is kind of just invalidated by the second and third acts in the main game, which explore the themes this DLC explores but BETTER.

None of the new characters are all that likeable, they're fine, but they got kind of grating by the end. Their motivations don't make a ton of sense, and the games pacing around the events is really off kilter and weird. It kind of feels like this chapter was designed to just make you upset the entire time, and the resolution feels... unearned. Mark & Nicole cheat on their partners and kiss at the end. Yay? The entire main game is about how they can't truly be together, and they don't even GET together at the end ANYWAYS and this whole chapter doesn't even actually MATTER and aaaagh. It's just hard for me to justify this chapters existence at all, when Mark is just an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the entire chapter and not someone I even want to root for.

If I can say one straight up just good thing about this chapter with no hangups, its that the music is fire, as always. The Until Then OST never misses. Beyond that, if you're gonna buy this DLC, just buy it for the Sofia chapter, which is enough a genuine treat that it might just be worth the $5. It also thankfully doesn't ruin the main game really at all, so I can appreciate that.

EASILY the best DLC for risk of rain 2 yet. The new final boss is some of the most insane things I've ever seen in a game, it's so freaking cool

The reviews for this game are silly enough that I feel inclined to write my own. This game is fantastic and if you loved hollow knight there is nearly no reason why you shouldn't also love this. Combat flows so much better, the gameplay feels great to play barring some weird jank with the downward pogo sometimes (but even that gets fixed within 5ish hours of the game thanks to the option of different loadouts that change your needles playstyle), the music is better, the areas are better, the polish is OUT OF THIS WORLD (I haven't run into any glitches or problems at all!) and the game is just FUN.

It's also very hard, yeah. But people are way overblowing it. No, not every enemy in the game does 2 masks. Generally everything you would expect to do 2 masks does, and you heal 3 MASKS, and not only that, but can heal way more often. It's tough, but it's tough in a way that feels incredibly fair and fun to play.

I haven't beaten the game yet, but 19 hours in, and I just want to keep playing more. Team Cherry made an absolute MASTERPIECE here, and if you even enjoyed hollow knight a little bit, you SHOULD play this. People saying it's "too hard" or whatnot are just having a skill issue.

I can pretty safely call this DLC worth it now. While online is still kinda laggy, its a lot more dependent on connection now, and playing with friends or randoms with a good connection feels amazing with the input delay fixes! The item balance changes are also incredible, a complete net positive to the game. Considering its free, if you're playing singleplayer there is ZERO reason to avoid this, and if you wanna play co-op, it works decently well now.

EDIT: Holy crap this community is insane. This DLC is a strict upgrade to Repentance. You won't be missing out on anything except a few minor nerfs (balanced by WAY WAY WAY more buffs). There is 0 reason not to play repentance+.

For right now, I can’t recommend this despite my love for this studio and my hype for this game, it falls short in a lot of regards.

Performance is straight up TERRIBLE, the healing system in this game is the most questionably designed healing system I’ve ever seen in my life, bosses feel far too tanky and unfair, the parry system is annoying, and progression is confusing and poorly explained, leading me to feel mostly frustrated.

I do think they can fix all of this, but it’s gonna take a LOT of work to fix the game balance stuff. The base concept is there, the worlds are cool, the hoverboard is fun, but man… please fix it up :(

Now admittedly sure, I might be a little biased, but I've been seeing Pinapl work on this game for quite some time and its really incredible how its turned out. Genuinely really charming visuals and rewards a lot of experimentation! If you're a person who just wants to cozy up and make some silly objects, this is the game for you. Not necessarily my type of game fully, but I've been finding plenty of fun in the bit I've been playing. Looking forward to new content in the future!

This DLC is honestly quite overhated, the game was really bad at launch sure, but the games been fixed up quite a bit since then, with a commitment to fixing more and more bugs and rebalancing the bad items and jank with the survivors. I think I wouldn't recommend buying it until that patch comes out, but the moment that patch comes out, this DLC is worth it. I've been having a blast despite the problems, False Son in particular is really fun!
