This game finds the sweet spot between a completely open unstructured world & mechanisms against the drive of your plans being wiped out from attack (if you choose that element of your game). And that's just it. Choice. There's so much of it that the attraction of continued play is that you learn better and better patterns for making things efficient. It doesn't matter if you don't get it right first time. You pick up the pieces and try again.
I was a bit the same with Oxygen Not Included where I felt like my first game was just teaching me how to play better; but with Factorio you can rip up what you've just done without penalty. And for that arguably unrealistic angle, the game is all the better for it. I can see from the little I've seen on various forums and wikis that I have barely scratched the surface of what's possible.
And that's why this game will without doubt be played over and over again.

It's a purchase I do not regret and I thank the developers for such a clever blending of elements that inspires you to be better at every turn.
