LoL is better than DotA 2, or DotA 2 is better than LoL? No and no.
Both games are different and have different playstyles.
I have 1k+ hours on dota and 1k+ hours on LoL.
I wouldn't play both games that much if they wouldn't have a difference.

DotA 2 isn't very friendly to new players and may seem a little bit confusing, also, the community is really negative and people like to blame for every single mistake someone does..
Game itself is really good, there's also a new engine coming up soon - with it come lots of new features, especially custom games that would be directly in the game without the need of installing dota 2 beta and etc..
It's a MOBA game, which requires 10 people to play, 5 of which are on each team.. Teamwork is usually the key and people don't like to listen to others even if they're right, but I recommend this game.

I guess that 17,000,000$+ in The International 5 speak for how big this game has become.
