I have Thalassophobia (Fear of large bodies of water) and this game does a great job of not going too far into it's potential fear factors. Subnautica walks the fine line between beautiful and terrifying, with sprawling ocean terrains and a variety of different friendly and, not so friendly fauna.

The sequel, Subnautica: Below Zero took a more fear factor based aesthetic which was a part of the reason I haven't finished the game yet. I'm looking at you, creepy giant jellyfish with a giant eyeball on top! Seriously, looking down into a deep dark ocean and seeing giant eyeballs looking back at you is not something I want to experience because that's some surreal Lovecraftian tier fear there.

Without spoiling much, without going on for too long and as best I can; this is why you should play this game:

There is something here for almost everyone, and this is so far the only game that I have 100%'d on Steam almost unintentionally. What has been made is an underwater world that genuinely feels alive, and I know that sounds stupid to some but it's what makes this game special.
