Rust is a multiplayer video game only available on PC that revolves around surviving on a massive island with other players. It has been in a development stage since 2013 and is currently updated every two weeks. The developers of Rust might have intended this game to be a normal survival game where you collect resources and create a base to sleep safely at night, but Rust has been molded by thousands of players into something far greater. The reason why many different players have poured thousands of hours into this seemingly simple survival game is because Rust gives a unique experience that no other game can replicate.
When you first load into a server on Rust you find yourself completely naked with nothing but a rock and a torch. You then proceed to run around the vast open world looking for resources to create tools and weapons. These newly found tools are used to gather resources faster and defend yourself from wild animals and, most importantly, other players. After playing this game religiously for many hours as well, I can say, with certainty, that this game is not new-player friendly. The game gives no tutorial on how to use any of your controls, collect resources, create a base. In addition to there being no tutorial, dying results in all of your previous progress being wiped.
Rust is an extremely brutal game for new players. The experienced players of Rust have all experienced the gruesome learning curve, learned from their countless encounters with strangers in the land, and the trust issues that this game brings. The main point that brings players of Rust back to the game, even through the hardcore grinding and cruel death resets, is the social experience. Meeting a random stranger on Rust where players tend to turn into savages and kill each other in order to survive, creates an unknown factor with each encounter. With each of these encounters, brings a different experience every single time you play Rust, which is why we come back for more. It is because we do not know what will happen when we continue playing, as each of our experiences are completely unique based off the decisions and choices we make as you meet others throughout the dangerous badlands.
Rust’s visuals are stunning. The game designers have successfully created the image of a desolate wasteland that keeps you immersed every second you are there. The lighting and shadow effects create experiences in the game where you truly feel like you are watching the sunrays pierce through the dense trees in an unknown land where no one is friendly, and survival is uncertain. The game has been constantly receiving optimization updates, as to boost the performance aspect and not strain your graphics card and processor. In addition to the outstanding graphics and visuals, the game itself does not require its users to have overly expensive components and is playable for almost everyone.
Rust is only $20, but the real price of playing Rust is the time you spend in this world. This game has no definitive objective, which means there is no end in sight. As long as you create a purpose for yourself, you may follow that road that can take you on endless opportunities. For example, instead of turning into a savage of the land, you become the boss of a shady fishing company that supplies goods to neighboring clans, which, in return, provides security and power within their territory. Your job is to bring new and unsuspecting players into your fishing corporation and force them to harvest the supplies or turn to death. The experiences you embark upon are up to your own creative desire and connections you make within the game.
Rust, being such a versatile game with different experiences to different players, will obviously have good and bad reviews based off their playthrough. As someone who has personally played this game for 1,800 hours since my freshman year of high school, I can say that experiencing the lows of the game are just as important as experiencing the highs. This game is not for people who give up easily, but instead for players who are so stubborn in wanting to complete their goals that they become very creative with different strategies in how to reach their goal. This game has an extremely tight community because all of the players understand the lows of what each player has gone through, and together, as a community, we create the crazy experiences that only the stubborn may see.
