Proud Estonian
Estonia declared independence in February 1918 after the Russian Empire collapsed. Soon after, Soviet Russia invaded, trying to retake the territory. Estonia quickly formed an army and, with help from Finnish volunteers and British naval support, pushed the Red Army out by early 1919.

At the same time, Estonia fought Baltic German forces who wanted to keep German control in the region. Their defeat in 1919 secured Estonia’s position.

The war ended with the Treaty of Tartu (1920), where Soviet Russia formally recognized Estonia as an independent state. This war laid the foundation for modern Estonia.

Tartto on kaupunki ja maakunta Kaakkois-Virossa. Kaupunkia kutsuttiin pitkään nimellä "Dorpat". Kaupungin rakensivat Liivinmaan saksalaiset (baltisaksalaiset). Kaupungilla on suuri merkitys nyky-Virolle.
