It's budget Fall Guys with Sonic characters. The monetisation is overbearing but the core game is fine enough to derp about with for a bit. Played it far more than I expected to.

It's another game where a flat thumbs up/thumbs down really doesn't get down to things.

As a piece of fighting game history, it's neat to have what is a functionally good PC port that doesn't seem to run with too many technical problems. It's relatively cheap, especially on a sale, so you won't feel too bad about the cost if your looking for a throwback game to play with a buddy for an hour or two.

As the debut of a fighting game series in the late 90's however, the game has a few nasty problems. Inputs are way less forgiving than more modern titles, the "destroyed" mechanic is an instant lose situation if you can't figure out how to perform the inputs in a timely and accurate manner, the character balancing is all over the place and the arcade mode ends with a boss that can spam a super giant laser that eats a huge amount of your health which has -almost- no counterplay.

With a glut of decent alternatives now available, it's hard to recommend this to anyone except those who are interested in seeing how the series evolved over the years. More a museum piece than a game.

Werecleaner's gameplay loop is easy to pick up and gives you few additional tools such as bagging co-workers and distracting them with trashballs. I had maybe one situation where I needed these tools to achieve a par time on the map.

This is a fantastically polished stealth experience wrapped with a very nice artstyle. There's still room to expand on the concept, but for a free game it's something everyone should try.

I tried going back to Portia and it's too jank to play after Sandrock. Don't think I can compliment a sequel any higher than that. It's pretty good!

Only one of my Steam friends has reviewed this game, back in January 2019. This was a negative review due to how frequently crash prone this game is, rendering it unplayable.

I can report this situation has not changed in September 2022. The only reason I have not refunded it is because I got it via the monthly Humble Choice. Loved JC2, disappointed that I can't even try to give this game a fair shake because it simply doesn't work.

Avoid.

Dev dunks on NFT cryptobros. Auto thumbs up from me.

Actually played this for a bit a while ago, it's alright. Probably better tactical games on the market but the Power Rangers/Super Sentai lick of paint is very on point so any fans of those will enjoy this.

Early Access Review
A short puzzler, Temple of Xiala was able to wrack my brain with some of it's later puzzles but ultimately isn't something worth spending money on.

I was glad to derp around with it for a while as I got it as part of a giant Yogscast 2018 Jingle Jam Humble Bundle, but i could not recommend anyone purchasing it directly for it's own sake.

Matchmaking is horrific - ranked will have smurfs crush you and casual match will set you against people completely out of your league.

Getting locked into a long combo by an opponent while the game does nothing to teach you how to prevent it or where your counterstrike point would be. Need to spend an entire university degree's worth of effort learning the tinest details of each single character so you don't spend most of a match getting smashed into the corner with no way of getting out.

Update: Many hours later, the game's problems remain the same. Ranked Match is the only way to get anything remotely fair, but this is not guaranteed when you have people smurfing in the lower levels. Casual Match is utterly unplayable - you only ever see top end players who can kill each of your characters in 1-2 combos. At that point, you might as well just go play Fantasy Strike instead.

Game badly needs some form of options to help players who don't have the time or skill to master these combos. An option to lower the damage you take from combos while lowering the damage you deal with them. But they won't, so the game has sunk into a rut like many fighting games before it - the only ones left will destroy new players so thoroughly they'll just give up and play something else, all while complaining that the game is dying.

EDIT: I've tried this game on and off over the last 2 years and came back again with the recent update. My view of the game is unchanged. When you actually get a similarly skilled opponent and the game does not lag to hell, it's a genuinely good fighting game. But that's not what happens 90% of the time.

What mostly happens is you get dunked on by smurfs in ranked. You, with your 45% win rate and nearly a thousand games total, vs someone of the same rank with only 50 games. Yet the opponent earns barely any extra points in order to rapidly get them out of a rank they are clearly outclassing. Winstreaks badly need to multiply the ranking points in order to get smurfs back into their proper brackets and allow lower skilled players to actually enjoy the online component, especially because...

"Casual Match" - possibly the worst case of false advertising i've seen in years. There are no casuals left in a fighting game of this age. The only opponent you will get is a top tier tournament level player who can dunk on you in 2 combos with each character and perform all sorts of techniques like crossups that you can't deal with. Even when it's become obvious their opponent is far below them, they don't tone things down to let the "casual" match actually be enjoyable. They will happily go full sweaty palm tryhard every single match. It's completely offputting to newer or lesser skilled players and it makes them quit.

Then they cry about their communities being dead.

Gunfire Reborn is an enjoyable roguelike that looks to have a bright future. It's simultaneously better than it should be but lacking on the content side, as one might expect with an early access title.

Still, the core gameplay loop is engaging enough to keep me coming back and thoroughly happy with my purchase.
