All I can do is say I strongly recommend playing this game if you enjoy short-story experiences with meaningful chaos.

Gameplay: 7/10
The gameplay is relatively easy and once you grasp the mechanics, combat is a breeze (just backing up and hitting while doing so suffices). I have no outstanding criticisms beyond the limits of the camera controls - I can only assume that this is because of the previously established 3-dimension-mouse-to-look mechanic put in place long ago by first person games.
There is a reason for every control that is introduced in the tutorial, so it would be unfair to say that the controls are a bad thing, considering what was achieved as they are now.

Storytelling: 9/10
The one point that would make this game a 10/10 would be that, occasionally, the story felt limited despite how open-ended most of its metaphors are, My girlfriend and I took lots of time carefully considering the meaning of the public school level (why do they want to die/what is causing this suffering/etc.), and determining whether we were playing as a psychopomp (definition) as we took lives or were actually playing as a character in close communication with a dying culture, or somehow able to communicate beyond their own world.
Nonetheless, the message is beautiful, and I even found myself in awe at how I went from considering that the MC was schizophrenic, then believing they were traumatised, then considering if they actually had powers, none of the former, or ALL of the former.

Highly addictive, without losing money IRL. The up-front price and 7 hours are all I've invested into this game and so far I have nothing but praise for the immense value I will get in the future from this game.

useful for setup organisation. if you do not mind dropping the cash, it's an extremely useful software.

Disclaimer
If you think that the sight or mention of the following would make a game too uncomfortable for you: sexual assault, body horror, extreme and mild violence, stalking, nihilism, religious-violence, existentialism, torture, nudity (not the "ooh hot" kind), and more - DO NOT play these games.

If you're curious enough but fear being made uncomfortable, don't bother with the first game and just get this one. Additionally, get the mod that censors sensitive content.

With disclaimers out of the way:

Review

I have personally never found myself overly obsessed with lore in games, nor have I ever had an interest in games that are intentionally designed to be difficult for new players. Fear and Hunger has since changed that disinterest for me.

The difference between the Fear and Hunger games and other RPG/Survival horror titles is the reward system. Fear and Hunger will reward every bit of knowledge you have. Even seemingly useless books and flavor text bear fruit for the player. Even IF the player finds themselves punished for not knowing something, they will be able to adapt their gameplay to avoid that punishment in the future and be rewarded with progress.

Re-playability is not an issue either - especially in FaH2. There are multitudes of characters to choose from, each with their own backstories in a "Choose your own adventure" style, with each choice made by the player impacting what skills and items the character they're playing has. This generates lots of starts for each character that one could try. Each character has individual chatting points and interactions related to their lore - including flavor text!

The lore, as well, is infinitely interesting. I found myself curious about everything only to be even more pleased when I would later discover that the game creator definitely had a reason for whether I knew or didn't know about what I saw. Every interesting question has either answers hidden in the environment or even more interesting questions - and I enjoyed it tremendously more then most games that really push their lore as a selling point.

Rating
Re-playability - Several characters, each character has a backstory that is modifiable by the player. Different days + different times of day, with individual stories, navigational rules, enemies, and items for every area - a majority of factors change depending on the aforementioned time. Arguably very re-playable.
Art - Sticks to its art style well. Conveys the feeling that the world I'm in was written to be fictional, but the characters and world are horrifically realistic - meshing realistic suffering under the fantastical fictional rules being imposed
Story - Takes a while to become familiar with story-related topics, written well nonetheless. Very (and obviously) inspired by many gritty titles.
Value - Compared to modern pricing, worth it
Performance - Mid to high performance PCs recommended

A trying game that's fun no matter how much experience you have. I enjoyed it on my first day played on console, and years later I find myself teaching new players the same techs some random pirates taught me in the past. I've grieved lost loot, fought foreign underwater creatures and braved new depths, died to krakens- and killed some too. I've delivered loot across the sea, stressed over puzzles buried within crumbling vaults, fished alone, fished with friends, ran from opposing reaper players, hunted emissaries, made alliances, and finally, after everything, I named and captained my own sloop. A ship with an identity, a style, in pristine condition; My own ship, and with it- a book to record my experiences as I do it all over again.
