Bear with me here, but, Terraria is like Minecraft. Except, not in the way you're thinking, rather Terraria and Minecraft are similar in the sense that they've both been monolithic giants for the last 10 years; ever-present and seemingly ever-growing.

And yeah, they've both got blocks too.

What sets Terraria apart from the competition however are the aspects that make it one of my favorite games, ever:

  • Loose, class-based system
  • Countless modifiers you can apply to your character and tools, through the use of accessories, etc
  • A natural, somewhat linear game progression
  • The option to ignore that progression entirely
  • A wide, wide variety of palette to choose from, with many tiles being animated or otherwise reactive
  • Rich environments with something new and exciting in each
  • There's a gay biome
  • And the list goes on...

Suffice to say it's an exceptional, one of a kind game, for $10 which is frankly a steal. I've personally had the game since 2013 -- it's what made me make a Steam account -- and in the time since then I've gotten so much more than $10 worth out of it.

However, nothing is without its faults, and seeing as this is a review, it's only fair to list those too; some key things to note when diving in:

  • The endgame is lacking. Once you face the final boss that's... basically it. Except now you have a bunch of cool, powerful weapons and tools, but nothing to do with them.
  • Building has some weird quirks. Oftentimes I find myself wishing I could achieve a certain look; maybe using a hammered block or something, but it just don't work.
  • Liquid physics are kind of a joke. Especially when using them for decoration; stuff flows the wrong way, or not at all. You kind of have to shoehorn any liquid decoration into your builds.
  • The netcode is pretty atrocious. My most recent playthrough has been on a dedicated server. The server itself runs in the same room on a separate box, and yet I still notice some Strange lag -- mobs disappear, clipping through blocks, etc. A few playthroughs ago was much worse; then I was using the Steam-based hosting. One player with some exceptionally bad internet hampered the rest of us. Boss items wouldn't drop, you were unable to pick up items they'd passed -- by the end of it I was so fed up.

All in all, despite its flaws, Terraria is still an exceptional game. The pros astronomically outweigh the cons, especially since it's only $10, and often on sale. So, if you've somehow not played Terraria yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up, you won't regret it.
