If you're a fan of the first game, FS2 is a direct upgrade.

HOWEVER

The game in it's launch state lacks many features that the first game shipped with, such as exporting match footage, and skirmish mode, which will be added in a patch on September 29th.

The multiplayer is the most well-developed part of the game. So if that's what you play FS for, you'll be right at home.

The singleplayer is another story. While FS2's city game is unique and engaging enough - with scheming and warring against the factions - there are many quality of life issues that can make things more difficult than they are. The UI can be unweildly, map generation ranges from perfect to bizzare and frustrating, and the enemy AI can easily kill themselves out of pure fancy. These are things that can be fixed with patches.

And the story, while compelling, lacks the same patience with itself that FS1 had. In FS2 you're tossed into the scenario without the most developed introduction to the world, and it's a struggle to really care about the story when making your own story through the city game is far more direct and engaging. I haven't finished the story, and I'm sure it has it's merits, but I'll say it could use a heavy-touch up on the presentation factor to really be a main draw.

Essentially, the singleplayer of FS2 is two games in one. The city-game alone can only get better with more upgrades and patches, but the story aspect could have used more tightening before full implementation.

tl;dr If you liked FS1 get FS2, or at least wait for major features to be implemented through patches. The multiplayer is the life of this game, and it's doing just fine.

Disclaimer: I was a beta tester.
