I really wish Steam had a neutral review for situations like this. The core gameplay is fluid and very satisfying, and the ancient Egyptian theme and art design are awesome, but as of the writing of this review the game is EXTREMELY short on content. It only took me a single 15 minute run to beat the game. Typically in a rogue-lite game you have to gradually increase your characters power by purchasing permanent upgrades over the course of several failed runs. Here, however, this whole system feels pointless and poorly implemented as, like I said, I was able to beat the game in just my first run, and later runs provide no additional content or increased difficulty.

I will commend the developer, a very small studio, for successfully nailing down the mechanics of a good shooter. Movement feels responsive and fast, and the weapons are impactful and satisfying to blast enemies away with. Visually the levels and enemy designs are creative and interesting too, although a few of the arenas are oddly cramped and don't lend themselves well to the fast paced gameplay.

Sadly, at the moment I don't recommend buying this unless it happens to be on sale for really cheap. Here's hoping the developer expands the game a bit in future updates. I would really love to see more arenas, enemies, bosses, and especially more difficulty to increase the longevity of the game.

An impressive and cohesive call back to an ARPG classic.

It kinda sucks.

-Boring indoor maze levels
-Awkward controls
-Very inconsistent weapon accuracy (sometimes your weapon just doesn't do anything)
-Lots of hitscan enemies later on
-Half of level progression is hidden behind fake walls (WHY?)

I really gave this game a chance but in the end it just ended up being Doom Eternal but inferior in every way.

- Gameplay is made incredibly difficult by the general jank/poor design. Large amounts of respawning hitscan enemies completely undermine the rapid mobility system and I quickly found myself hiding in corners and small rooms waiting for them to come to me. Even then, this didn't stop them from spawning directly behind me and hosing me down before I had time to react.

- The inventory management system is needlessly confusing. It felt like the developers were trying to reinvent the wheel with this one. What you don't put in a loadout slot at the end of the mission is automatically sold.

- The side missions boil down to just you killing or capturing targets in re used portions of the campaign levels. I wouldn't generally mind this much but the portions of levels used are very linear and do not lend themselves well to the gameplay at all. I found myself often rushing through narrow tunnels and passages, ignoring the rapidly respawning enemies so I could get to the objective without wasting my precious stimms and medkits.

- The story or what little there was is mostly there to explain why you're hopping from level to level gunning down baddies. I can't speak for it as a whole as I didn't finish the game.

- The best aspect of this game was simply its artistic and world design. The environments and characters are well detailed and very evocative of the 40k setting. For the most part all the enjoyment I derived from the game was from soaking in the details of the world.

In the end Hired Gun was a let down that I had high hopes for despite Warhammer's bad track record with video games. It has some redeeming qualities but ultimately as a video game it was largely unenjoyable .
