I want to preface this review stating that I have not yet played Automaton Lung. I went in pretty much completely blind to what this assumed sequel had to offer.

Automaton Heart is one of my favourite games of the year so far. It's beautiful synthy music mixed with it's visuals of which I like to personally categorize as "crust-fu⁣ck" (I use this term endearingly) converges into a very unique ambience of which I have only seen captured by few games in the past; it very distinctly screams "indie" to me.

Automaton Heart is certainly not the type of game that will hold your hand. Other than a few basic tutorial messages at the beginning and vague directions on where you'll need to go to progress later on, you're pretty much entirely left to your own navigation skills to find your way through the vast open world. While some may be turned off by this prospect, I thought it really added to not only my personal engagement with the game, but the mistique of the world and the megastructures contained within. During my time playing I was constantly mapping things out in my mind, trying to discover ways in which I could access new dungeons with my mobility of which was progressively improving throughout.

I managed to complete the main quest in around 10 hours with no outside internet help, due to the fact that the game had just released and is still relatively obscure. I encourage those who play to try and follow suit, as the sense of accomplishment you gain from navigating on your own is very rewarding.

I'll likely add to my review once I play more; there's still so much I have to say about it.

I do hope the developer of Death Wish is getting a sizeable cut from this game's sales because some of the levels included in their mod still managed to blow my mind all these years later. Some of the absolute best work I've seen out of a game's modding community solely driven from the developer's raw passion and love for the original work.

the launcher buttons are genuinely louder than some of the jumpscares and i wouldn't have it any other way
