I've tried to get into Dwarf Fortress over the years but the ASCII art style and obtuse controls made it difficult. This new Steam version fixes those frustrations, and the underlying game is incredible.

If you like Rimworld, you'll love the game that inspired it.

Early Access Review
I want to say right off the bat that at the time of writing this review, my playtime is only around 7~ hours on Steam. I'll be honest and let you know that I pirated this game, and put about 50~ hours into it, before I got round to buying it. Glad I did because it's one of the best early access games I've played.

----------------------------------------

Gameplay: The gameplay is insanely fun and varied. Couple a wide variety of playable characters with a huge amount of useable items and enemies and you've got one hell of an experience. The game is constantly ramping up the difficulty, forcing you to adapt your playstyle all the time. No run is the same with random item drops and enemy spawns, and each boss encounter keeps you on your toes, even two hours into a run. And I do mean two hours; if you're skilled at the game and the RNG treats you just right, you can become a god, decimating swathes of enemies before they even get a chance to attack you. There are a couple balancing issues with certain characters being weaker than others, and some bosses can unfairly one-shot you, but you can just git gud and the frequency of this will lessen.

Graphics: I really dig the lo-fi artstyle of the game. Each character, enemy and item is unique and well modeled, with just enough detail to stand out. The particle effects are lovely too. The UI is decent, but could use a bit of work; holding tab to see your items can be a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mid-game.

Sound/Music: The music is incredible. Go listen to it on youtube, it's lovely. Fast paced and atmospheric. Sound effects are great too (the sound of a Stone Titan charging and firing it's beam gives me chills every time).

Replayability: Plenty of content in the game already, and there's only going to be more added. Each run is never the same and keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen next. Late/End-game can be a bit boring once you've mastered monsoon difficulty but there are a few mods out there that ramp up the challenge and change gameplay. Once game modifiers are introduced we'll have a crazy amount of replayability.

Multiplayer: Playing with friends is a blast as it increases enemy spawns and difficulty. Playing with randoms can be fun but also frustrating as there's no item share, or any way to drop items you don't need and want your co-op partner to have. Expect to have your ♥♥♥♥ stolen frequently if you're not playing with people you know. Modders can also join public games and mess up your experience too, but I haven't had this happen too often to be a huge issue.

Overall, in it's current state, I would rate this game 9/10. It's almost perfect as it is and I'm excited to see what the future holds for this game.

READ FIRST: Given what I've seen of the game, I would probably have recommended it. But my experience has been negative so I'm giving it a thumbs down.

I thought I had a pretty decent rig. I can run most games on at least the high settings, if not ultra. I was excited to play this game because from what I'd seen, it was a refreshing take on the game with some key changes made to the gameplay. It looked like the extra year of dev time payed off.

Sadly I've had to refund this game because it was running poorly even with everything set to medium. Yes, I could have set everything lower and maybe had a decent framerate, but the game would look garbage and I can't be arsed with that. At the same time, running a game at sub-60 FPS is just something I can't tolerate these days. The game may be good, but the performance problems I've faced and the fact that I've refunded it means I have to give it the thumbs down.

My specs:
GTX 980
i7-5820k
16gb Ram
Installed on an SSD.

It's probably time for me to upgrade my graphics card, but until I can I'll have to leave this game unplayed.

On a side note, one thing that did have a negative impact on my experience, even for the short time I played the game, was the awful in-game advertisements for microtransactions and DLC. I spent literally all my time with the game in menus trying to sort out my graphical settings, and I was constantly having to skip through pop-ups. That's ridiculous. I've recently been warming to Ubisoft despite focing Uplay down my throat because of the support they've been giving Rainbow Six Siege, but these adverts have ruined any chance of me trusting this company again.

Cannot stand publishers ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on their games communities like they've done here with GTA V and OpenIV.

Don't buy this game until they get the message.

This game. This ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game. It's cute as ♥♥♥♥; everything is super simple with funny faces and pastel colours. It's gorgeous. The soundtrack is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome, one of the few that I HAD to buy. The gameplay is solid, and as someone who's very competitive, I love the speedrunning nature of the game. Would seriously recommend.

Bought this one a whim and, stangely, it's actually quite good. I had heard bad things about the previous games but decided to give it a go.

The areas you can hunt in are surprisingly big, and there are a number of interesting and engaging challenges or "hunts" to take part in.

The game can cater to people who are both new to hunting games and want a more arcade-y experience, as well as fans of the genre.
