Somebody tell me what the antonym of cooking is because that's what the devs are doing here. Art direction, animation, and voice acting are great, but they don't even come near to covering all the problems with the mechanics of the game.

-Combat is slow and clunky. Hitboxes are all over the place. Blocking with a shield with a medium or lighter build makes absolutely no sense, as you still take healthy chunks of damage if you block successfully.

-Your stamina is located on a circle placed unceremoniously your character. Your health and focus bar are in the top left corner. So, during combat, you're constantly switching between looking at your enemy, yourself, and the top left to survive. I've seen more consistency with where your gaze is meant to be in a Jackson Pollock painting. You might argue that there's more information on the character circle but in the heat of battle when dodging is important, it's just way too busy for the eyes. Let's not even get into what it feels like when you're facing more than one enemy at a time.

-Navigating constant verticality in an isometric view is a nightmare. There are next to zero clever design elements pointing you to your next location. I'm not asking for yellow painted arrow symbols. I'm asking for literally anything other than nothing.

-Upgrading the town and refining materials require real life time to pass. No. Even the most diehard fans of the game wave this off as "not being that annoying." I've yet to see anyone make a compelling point about how this improves the game experience or ties into the main themes of the game.

-There's no system for tracking where you might acquire needed resources. You just "sort of remember" where things are and run around like a chicken with its head cut off, hoping you find what you were looking for.

-You have to farm for food items for healing. It's like the developers can't let go of this massive waste of time because A) they really want a cooking system in the game and B) they want you to hit your inventory cap and be annoyed by it. Why do I know they intentionally want you to be annoyed by it? Because it's purposely built into the rewards system! When you beat bosses, you get "Plague Ichor" which you then CHOOSE which game system annoys you the most and you want to fix, limited inventory space included.

Ignoring quality of life lessons from other developers doesn't make for a more hardcore experience, it just makes for a more irritating one. I was initially excited by the art direction, but nearly every other aspect of my interaction with No Rest for the Wicked just turns me back towards seasoned devs who don't have to re-learn what kind of game systems do and don't frustrate players from minute one.
