It's the only game since Skyrim which has satisfied that particular itch.

Build options, emergent gameplay, side-quest focus. It sacrifices some of the elder scrolls immersion to focus on storytelling, and in that regard it does an excellent job. The Matter of Britain being the basis for the world and the game being set on Avalon means if you have a rudimentary appreciation for Arthur, Merlin, Camelot etc you will have something to latch onto as you make your way into understanding the story. That said, the devs have a very unique take, so don't be surprised when you see e.g. Percival as a gothy priestess girl dual wielding greatswords.

It's also quite a philosophical game, discussing topics such as the rights of rulers, centralization versus devolution, and even the nature of reality itself. Kinda like Planescape: Torment in that regard. Dialogue options are also meaningful, for example you can miss some quest chains entirely just by being rude to someone when you could've been kind, or even vice versa.

There is a detailed crafting system, and you can either engage with its systems (smithing, alchemy and cooking), or ignore it entirely. If you do use it though, there are some great options to vastly improve your existing gear. A crafting main (Practicality stat) is honestly the most powerful archetype for going through the game with due to how powerful upgrading your gear is.

The combat feels great, and you can tell that there is an understanding of historical accuracy in the melee weapon animations. You have the block/dodge/parry you'd expect from a game like this, and ways to upgrade all of them in meaningful ways.
The music is memorable, the background music is evocative without being obtrusive, and the game's main motif recurrs in multiple tracks. The sound design is also absolutely peak. Weapon attacks, lockpicking, whoever did the SFX for this game deserves an award.

All in all, a great game. Ticks every box for someone like me.

999 is a masterpiece. Fun puzzle gameplay and a riveting, non-linear story that compels you to gather every drop of information and complete every ending.

Virtue's Last Reward attempts to replicate this and falls short on just about every metric. The protagonist (I believe intentionally) not being voiced makes every conversation feel stilted, and arguments one-sided. The protagonist in the first game added a ton of emotion and brought the scenes alive. VLR's feel dead. The 3D characters are also a huge step down from the animated 2D ones. Often the character models will be pulling the same dopey smile on their face texture even while they're screaming for their lives. The story is also worse, and the puzzle designs are more repetitive.

I would suggest playing the first one and forgetting VLR exists.

A masterpiece in every aspect of its creation. Just play it, you'll understand.

If you like CRPGs even a little, you owe it to yourself to try this one out. There's no other game quite like it.

Very cool game that explores mental health for the undead. The art and voice acting are gorgeous, and you end up learning a lot along the way. The gameplay is quite simplistic, so don't go in expecting a mechanical or logical challenge - it's more your presuppositions about mental health and healthy communication that will be challenged. And that sounds pretty good to me.

Well, it's been over a month and the performance issues are still making the game unplayable. I have a powerful PC and no issues with other modern releases, and have tweaked things a lot. DO NOT BUY until the community have confirmed the performance issues have been resolved.

If you like Slay the Spire, it's impossible not to like this. The work these modders have done matches and seamlessly blends into the devs original content, while also offering a game mode that allows you to play as bosses from the original mode. Fantastic fun and adds even more replayability to one of the most replayable games out there.

Coordinate with a team of survivors to escape, or hunt them down as the killer, in a game featuring a massive roster of characters recognizable to fans of horror media. It offers fun, chaotic, and often frustrating gameplay that can take thousands of hours to fully master, along with surprisingly rich (albeit inconsistently presented) lore for its original content. It’s well worth trying at least, as there’s no other game quite like it.
