So meta that it surpasses its own inspiration, Earthbound, by far and wide.
Like Metal Gear Solid, it uses these techniques to actually tell a story that, unlike many AAA-blockbusters, doesn't feel condensending in any way, partially because it masterfully juggles light-hearted tones and nice humour with the occasional more serious or sad moments.
To know anything about this game prior, however, would totally be ruining the experience, so I suggest you just buy it blindly and dive right in (or play the free demo if you are so unsure).
For me, it was a true discovery and left a mark on me, like many 'unknown' games did at their time.
