Quick gacha overview at a glance: character banners are on a 50/50 system, with hard pity at pull 80. There is no weapon banner. All new characters, save for a choice few Limited Characters, enter the standard pool after 3 patches. Pity carries over for the regular banners (new non-limited character + rerun character banners share a pool, standard banner has its own pool.) R1999 likes running special banners sometimes, though, so double-check the pity rules for those. Usually six-week patches (varies sometimes, as global is trying to catch up with CN, but nothing that's felt rushed so far), lots of free codes / login bonuses / opportunities for pull currency.

The art style was what drew me to the game, the character designs and stellar EN voice acting is what made me stay. They've built such an interesting universe, and the writing for the main story chapters honestly just keeps getting better and better. The turn-based gameplay loop is pretty straightforward, but with enough depth, unique animations, and gameplay modes to keep things fresh and interesting. Early events (and early story, but I think they fixed that now?) have some rough translation/localization issues, which get infinitely better as you progress towards more recent content. Just push through it if you can.

Another common criticism I've seen is that it takes a long time to "fully" build a unit (e.g. I3 L30 R10)--anywhere from 2 - 5 weeks of farming, depending on the materials you have on-hand and whether or not you keep up with event shops. Considering that this is the dev's way of balancing the fact there is no weapon banner or RNG loadout farming (weapons are grabbed for free using in-game time-gated currency + there is no gear system whatsoever), I personally think it's a fair trade. YMMV, though.

As a gacha game veteran and day-one R1999 player, I am comfortable calling Reverse 1999 very F2P / low-spender friendly. I would say the only "must-pull" unit within the game is Tooth Fairy, a very strong healer. Other than that, there are many combinations that can be pulled off for most of the characters, as long as you know how to team-build. Doubly so, now that older characters are getting retroactively buffed to keep up with newer units.

If you're patient, and you don't pull impulsively, you can steadily collect the units you need to clear almost everything. The monthly pass is a good deal, if you play daily. The game also launches good event-exclusive deals for spenders of all types. Like many gacha, the highest levels of certain endgame modes do have shifting metas to keep up with, but the game doesn't make you feel like you're missing out on anything by not being able to clear them.

Be warned, R1999's skin game is unreal. I know plenty of people who broke F2P status just because a skin they really liked dropped for their favourite character. I don't mind nor do I regret spending money on this game, though. You can see how much love Bluepoch poured into this project, and I want to see this game going for years to come. (I'm literally only playing it on Steam and writing this review to help boost their numbers because I think they very much deserve it.)
