"BOMB RUSH CYBERFUNK IS DRIPPING WITH STYLE"

Bomb Rush is everything I had hoped for, and more. It takes so much inspiration and so many concepts from JSRF, and improves on all of them. If Sega were to reboot Jet Set now, it would have to play like Bomb Rush.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
When I booted up BRC for the first time, I was met with the most beautifully stylized main menu screen I've seen in a decade. The music came in, and I was giddy to start playing. My first 10 minutes had me in tears of joy, both from the nostalgia of JSRF, which BRC has several callbacks to, and from the overwhelming style of it all. During my first time hanging out at the Hideout as Red, skating around and doing simple kickflips, I was having the most pure, concentrated vibe sesh I've had in a game in a long while.

CHARACTERS:
The character designs are beautiful and stylish, with a handful of different outfits for each character, to change up their color scheme. There are several unlockable bonus characters throughout the world of New Amsterdam, each with their own personalities, fashion, and preferred movestyle. (I say "preferred," but it makes no gameplay difference. It's just the movestyle they start with by default.)

Instead of riding around strictly on inline skates, Bomb Rush expands and brings in different movestyles: BMX bikes and skateboards. These two movestyles aren't just for looks, either, they have practical purposes - around the several stages, there are bicycle storage gates that only open if you're on a bike, and lifts that can only be operated by spinning on top of them with a skateboard.

MUSIC:
BRC has a fantastic soundtrack. It feels like there are a few different styles, but they all mix together so well. So many talented artists worked on this game, and you can hear it. Certain areas of New Amsterdam have their own playlists, so the music doesn't feel samey unless you're spending a lot of time in the same place. If the soundtrack is ever released on vinyl, you can bet I'm buying it.

MOVEMENT:
The movement mechanics themselves are very fun, and even offer a slight learning curve. Riding around chaining tricks at Versum Hill during my first visit there, and then coming back after I had finished the story, I could really see how far I had come in learning the movement.

STORY:
BRC's story is mysterious and intriguing. The big story moments have drastically different tones than the rest of the game, and they're complimented greatly by the unique music that isn't heard in the main free-play areas. There were a few twists that I genuinely did not expect, and the ending left me feeling VERY satisfied.

COMPLAINTS & SUGGESTIONS:
- The speed cap is too low, and I was left wishing I could go faster.
- Toilets need a 'Cancel' button, to exit without changing outfit or clearing your heat.
- The map on the pause menu should show which areas the roads are leading to.
- While I like the flip-phone camera, I was left wanting more. I think BRC could use a full-blown photo mode.
- A custom map marker would've been great. The stages aren't THAT big, but I still got turned around at least 3 different times, and ended up forgetting how to get to an Oldhead.
- There were a few times where I noticed little holes where I could see the void behind the playable space.
- When changing movestyles in the Hideout, there should be a visual preview of how your current character will look with the new movestyle, especially since there are different skins.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
Absolutely wonderful game. Thank you Dion Koster & Team Reptile, you all did a damn good job.

P.S. I spent vacation days to play this

great short horror game, i played it while streaming to a voice chat with friends, it got intense and made us all uncomfortable (which is good because it's horror)

the visual style is pleasant to look at, and mixes very well with horror

at just $3, it's kind of a steal

I bought Sable because it was on sale and looked pretty, and I was very pleasantly surprised with the beautiful experience that this game is. The visuals are stunning (cel shading is awesome) and the soundtrack, by Japanese Breakfast, is even better. I fell in love the moment I first heard the main menu theme. This game is full of beautiful moments, and I'm happy to have been able to witness them.

The game unfortunately has a pretty big bug problem, including one where the menus fail to respond, making it so you can't even save your game. I was able to get around that by fast travelling, since it autosaves, and restarting the game.

But aside from the bugs, this game is magnificent. I walked into it completely blind and walked out completely blown away. Definite recommend, regardless. I'd say it's worth the $25, and if you can catch it on sale, it's definitely worth whatever it's discounted to.
