An absolutely bona fide classic available for free. If you don't like dosbox, download the Raze engine (raze.zdoom.org) and play with modern improvements.

Just a few missions, but is a good showcase of the gameplay (although not all the equipment or weapons). A very good demo of the full game.

tl;dr Great physics based combat, and excellent balance of arcade gameplay and story.

tl;dr it's a great roguelike game, simple enough for newcomers to the genre, but deep enough complexion for players used to it to have fun and strategize.
I played DoomRL for years before getting this, and I wish I had gotten it sooner. With a steady release of updates and balancing patches, it stays fresh and fun. I'm excited for the future of the game, and I think more people need to play it.

This is one of those games where if you are able to overcome the flaws that naturally come from that era of games, you'll definitely get at least some joy out of it. It is similar to Half-Life in that regard. Deus Ex's real strong point is the freedom it gives players to play with whatever style suits them, and levels built around the varying methods of play. Deus Ex also leads the player through a dark world filled with conspiracies and huge scientific breakthroughs, all while the apocalypse is seen just over the horizon. The setting, music, characters, and sense of immersion are an acquired taste, but you will soon feel yourself in this world.
