Midway through my first playthrough of The Bunker, I remembered the quote from Javik in ME2:
"Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls, and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer."

The beast that hunts you is not the most horrifying aspect of the game.

I rarely enjoy games that have a war setting as it's often glorified. Given The Bunker's more realistic depiction, stellar sound design, and just overall 10/10 horror atmosphere, I can easily recommend this to horror/Frictional fans.

But I want to be sure to add that the supernatural horror combined with real-world torture methods/etc does return from Dark Descent-- and this time in a setting that isn't some whole orb-adventure-castle but instead is an already horrifying setting filled with indiscriminate death and real-life PTSD situations as a feature. It seems obvious, but it's just so perfectly done, it's hard to fully grasp until you experience it.

The atmosphere is so well done that I can only describe it as oppressive, claustrophobic, and a constant war against hopelessness at your situation--

  • You have a gun, but you are no hero. You are easily eliminated. Any fight/encounter will be brutal, quick, and full of fear. Every rare bullet you find must be loaded manually, and the spent shells will not remove themselves without you actively emptying them. Do you really have a bullet left, do you remember? Or will you just hear the *click*?
  • There is no noble character here, alive or dead. Rats feast on the corpses of your comrades, and your entombment was caused by those who saw their deaths and ran. You were abandoned, a totally acceptable sacrifice to the beast and the rats in the minds of those who made the call knowing full well they were signing your death warrant.
  • You will see unfiltered and pointless deaths. You will hear both familiar and foreign tongues cry for mercy. And, in the darkness and rot and death, you will have to decipher if the rumbles around you are from the beast hunting you or simply the continued shelling from above.
  • Are the movements in the shadows real or in your mind? Was your amnesia a blessing to have forgotten something you've done?

No one is coming to save you. You're as good as dead already. Keep the generator topped up-- the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ hates light.

10/10 - Had me frightened of the dark but not enough to use a hand-crank loud af flashlight, and will absolutely be one of the games I try to 100% the achievements.
