A High-Octane Journey Through a Dystopian World

Introduction
Note: It is treated as a reboot and not a continuation to Mirror's Edge (2007) but it does have a prequel i.e. The Mirror's Edge Exordium comic, which is also hinted at in the game.

We play as Faith Connors in a beautiful dystopian white city of Glass. Everything in Glass is interconnected through a large-sce surveillance system called Grid. Most people in glass work for corporations, whereas Faith is recognized as a Runner. https://v1.steam.hlxgame.cc/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2921421898 Runners are known for their expertise in parkour, allowing them to traverse rooftops swiftly, making them a perfect candidate for quick or illegal delivery jobs.

Gameplay
Graphics:
The city of Glass uses vibrant colors, minimalist design and sleek architecture, presenting a memorable environment to explore both day and night. Each character and their fashion are designed to seamlessly fit this world, showcasing an impressive attention to detail.

Difficulty:
It can feel overwhelming to complete a singular objective at hand until familiar with fair amount of mechanics that define its parkour system. However, with enough practice, the feeling of executing a perfectly timed sequence of precise maneuvers is highly rewarding.

To help players catalyse this learning process, the game offers optional assistance as Runner Vision, Player Echoes & Tutorials.

Content & Replayability:
There are a total of 13 campaign missions, 15 side missions (which requires specific criteria to unlock), 5 collectable types & open world activities that encourage players to explore the hidden corners of Glass.

Some of the open world activities are:

Delivery Jobs: Runners are usually hired to deliver packages within a set time limit & specific to case instructions.
These instructions break up delivery jobs in-game into 3 sub-categories:
  1. Dead Drop: No further restrictions.
  2. Fragile: Runner must not stumble more than once before completing the delivery.
  3. Covert: Runner must not allow themselves to be seen by anyone from K-Sec.
GridNodes:
These are special locations that requires fair puzzle solving to complete. https://v1.steam.hlxgame.cc/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2921421266 The attached screenshot displays a typical GridNode. Sabotaging the terminal located at top the node while eluding installed security measures offers worthy in-game rewards.

Dash:
There exists 22 unique parkour-based time trial challenges. Players will be placed in a competitive skill group based on their performance under every Dash. Skill groups in an ascending order are classified under 5 subdivisions of Plastic, Glass, Silver, Black & Red each.

All content in the game features a quick replay option, making the game highly replayable.

Combat:
It is a blend between parkour & martial arts that allows for divergent takedown effects. Combat feels exceptional as long as there's momentum but becomes clunky & awkward without it. https://v1.steam.hlxgame.cc/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2921422133 Enemies will shoot as good as stormtroopers & often overreact on slightest of nudges.

Audio
SFX:
Cues of footsteps or actions such as running, climbing, landing or gasps of panic when falling augments the fluidity of gameplay experience.

Music:
OST produced by Solar Fields is a perfect fit for this setting featuring a range of electronic genres that carefully capture the atmosphere beautifully.

Theme song: CHVRCHES - Warning Call showcases a beautiful synth-pop.

Verdict
In a world like Glass, few surfaces may feel unpolished but on a complete scale the presentation is nothing less than professional & extraordinary.

Score:
95/100

Story
You play as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley, from the movies. You've been offered a position aboard the Torrens ship for a mission to retrieve a flight recorder from your mothers ship i.e. the Nostromo, by Christopher Samuels. You soon begin to uncover the truth about the station, its past, its members, the politics, the betrayals and the fact that you're on board with survivors ready to kill, with an Alien species on your tail. Every tragedy that struck Amanda made me feel sad, when she was disappointed I was too. This is one of the few games where I truly connected with the protagonist. It also provides satisfying lore and easter eggs for the fans. Everything is well-crafted and equally interesting to learn at any point.
Gameplay
It took me 25 hours to finish on Hard difficulty, including a lot of exploration (lengthy single-player games are a rare gem). It is not limited to just survival horror but also includes some action elements to help you get out of certain situations without constantly sneaking around. However, for the most part, stealth is your only option, as you cannot kill the Xenomorph, and resources required to deal with other enemies are limited and hard to find. Resources include ammo for weapons like the Revolver, Shotgun, Bolt Gun, Flamethrower, Stun Baton, and Maintenance Jack, along with a range of useful craftable and upgradable items: Smoke Bombs, Flashbangs, EMP Mines, Pipe Bombs, Noisemakers, Medkits, and Flares that you can use to your advantage. You are also equipped with a motion tracker that shows, on a horizontal plane, the position of nearby living entities within a quarter-circle radius. As an entity gets closer, the device beeps at a higher rate and pitch. Graphics are phenomenal. Sevastopol is huge to explore and very well designed. Space looks great, and the semi-open-world design only makes exploration and navigation more immersive.
AI
You encounter 3 types of enemies. Here's a list describing them in ascending order of encounter frequency:
  1. Humans: These are super dumb & very annoying. You can shoot, burn & fool them quiet easily (like IRL). They patrol specific areas and shoot on sight. You can also direct other enemy types toward them or vice versa, so you don’t always have to deal with them directly.
  2. Androids: Smarter than humans but still dumb. You can still shoot, burn, and fool them, but it’s slightly more difficult. Killing them requires adequate resources, so avoiding them is often the better option.
  3. The Alien: That thing... that terrifying thing is smarter than everything else. You cannot kill it or fool it; in fact, it will fool you and kill you. You can hide in lockers, vents, or under tables, but it will eventually track you down. The slightest sound will alert it to your exact position, you hear loud thuds getting closer, and within seconds, you’re dead. Its behavior is completely unpredictable and there’s no scripting your way around it. Not to mention, it adapts to your playstyle and learns as you progress.
Every time I enter a new area, my first objective is to find a hiding spot. Whenever the story requires me to perform a noisy task, I immediately run to hide and wait for it to show up if it’s bound to. The only upper hand you have is fire. When you point it at the Alien, it won’t rush but will slowly approach, staring into your eyes until you pull the trigger. It then retreats briefly, only to come back and make you sweat again.
Any instance where it is mentioned or even if there’s a possibility of it being around I feel terrified and slowly crouch my way to a save point, which feels incredibly rewarding. The AI does not cheat, there’s no 50-50. If it knows where you are, it will come for you or bait you out. Every death means you made a mistake.
Audio
Not just the beeps of the motion tracker, but the heavy footsteps of the Alien create immediate tension. And when you hear its terrifying shriek, the only thing you can do is say "oh s#it" and accept your fate. SFX are well done, though I was slightly disappointed by how frequently androids repeat their dialogue. The fear-inducing score is on point, everything on screen and in your headphones works together perfectly to keep your heart racing. Andrea Deck’s performance as Amanda Ripley was remarkable.
Verdict
It is a really good game. Sure, there are things it could’ve done better, and there are exploits that can make the journey easier but I’d be lying if I said the cons matter beneath everything this title offers. Score:
100/100
A side quest: go to YouTube > search for IGN's Alien: Isolation review > leave a dislike, or the Alien will haunt you.
