I remember being encouraged to play this game back in 2018 - I only played about 30 minutes and thought "huh, this is kinda good" and forgot about it.

What a shame I waited five years to get around to it.

The Messenger is one of the most incredible games I've ever played - the controls are tight, movement is satisfying, the music is a tribute to the era. If you're someone who is having a hard time in your life and have some time, I suggest you play this - and when you can, talk to the Shopkeeper. He's pretty insightful.

10/10, definitely playing again.

A loving tribute to those who came before, Sabotage Studios stole my heart and dazzled me with wonder.
Charm oozes from the character art, the world building. This is a silly rpg with serious moments - much like Chrono Trigger or the original FFVII - with the combat flare of Super Mario RPG thrown in for good measure.

If you are on the fence, buy this game. Give it a chance. It very likely will impress you.

Edit: the sound design is actually my favorite part of the whole game and I forgot to mention it. From multiple versions of music tracks for different time of day, audio and genre bending, Eric Brown and Yasunori Mitsuda delighted my ears. I hadn't heard of bardcore before - and it was fantastic.

Wonderfully simple premise of risk and reward. Bopping soundtrack and satisfying combat, even if hectic and unconventional.

Utterly incredible through and through.

Pros: Eerie soundtrack. Superb atmosphere.
Cons: ... Only that I'm more confused now than when I started. But that's kinda a good thing.

Without spoilers I'll tell you that I'm looking forward to many many hours poking around for more and more secrets. This game is so much more than it appears - and if you've played Pony Island you'd know.

Avid sonic fan here to give my take on this game.

Pros- Fun, easy to pick up combat
Gotta go fast mechanics
A fairly decent learning curve (until late game, see cons)
Multiple playable characters, with unique mechanics
Catchy music

Cons:
Difficulty spike. End game has three bosses in particular that challenge your use of mechanics. Not impossible, but much harder compared to others
Plot- amateur, with a lot of heart, but... what was I watching?

Overall, if you liked sonic games, and a beat em up game of any kind, you SHOULD like this.

As a battle hardened veteran of the original, I wanted to throw my opinion in the ring.
Pros:
Amazing new engine (hooray, not flash!)
Fantastic new items and combinations!
New characters (and new versions of old characters)
Fun new challenges

Con:
The soundtrack

Now, the soundtrack is okay- it's around par for a game of this type, but the original soundtrack for TBOI was phenomenal. I listened to it for 1600 hours, not including the amount of time I watched other casters play the game, etc. Danny's music far exceeds the feel of the music of this game... and after only sixty hours of play I have to listen to other music. Thank goodness for a mute feature... as it doesn't have the feel or fun factor of the original.

Overall? 8/10, but a 10/10 for your money. You'll get a lot of replay out of this game, and it's a blast to get an amazing run and breeze through, or force a bad run all the way through. Buy it (especially when it goes on sale.)

Honestly, the best deal for my money I've ever had. 290 hours at this point, still not getting old. Great to play, best to stream. 10/10
