Well, this game is the opposite of Alcoholic Anonymous for upgrade junkies.
It's that evil friend who just buys you another drink.
You'll relapse.
Don't be like me, be strong, don't buy this game.

no easy way to disengage VR takeover

Mindustry: If you have a life, not anymore.

It is by far the most addictive game that I know.
Both campaigns are well balanced and have different tech trees and topology.
Each battlefield unlocks new tech, which scratches that upgrade itch.
This pushes me for just one more hour, away from actually having a life and being productive.

To give you an idea, I restarted this mission Intersect 7 times, spent maybe 10 hours because the enemy AI kept attacking weak spots with aerial. Then when I get those plugged I counter attack one of their 3 bases, big mistake, they had amassed about 200 tier 3 units which razed my base. That was my 5th attempt.
On the last attempt I get nearly pulverized but my long range canons saved the base, unfortunately aerials took out 2 out of the 3 reactors so all resources came to a grinding halt. So here I am, while seeing my inner base being slowly destroyed by their surviving mech, I reroute the magma to bypass Nitrogen reactors and fill the chemical power plants, shut down the secondary mining to reroute enough power to kick start beryllium production so that I can rebuild the conveyors to some inner guns to take out that last mech.
And just when I get back to positive power output, a second wave storms in.
It took 3 hours just to get back on my feet and I went to bed at 2am.

When you play this game you start seeing blocks and re routing liquids in your dreams. It's bad.

A bit too addictive.
Fortunately I can stop at any time.
Now I must grab my pickax and dig my back yard.

The sweetest game.

So buggy but also so good!
I love grinding, new stuff, upgrading and ... since I made McDROID, action TD!
This one is the most fun, It's full of surprises and when you're in the groove it throws something new at you, for example a giant S.H.I.E.L.D carrier that you control the main laser and movement.
Each level has new enemies and strategies. It gets relentless.
The bugs are numerous, mostly GUI so nothing game breaking. Towards the end you only use 5 turrets. The rest is too fragile so yeah the balance becomes off but overall it's very well made.

If you care about your health Don't touch this game!
