Darkwood is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a unique, stylish, and well designed survival horror experience.

The atmosphere of the game is simply outstanding - from the sound design to the art style, I found Darkwood to be endlessly creepy and yet somehow inviting. There is just something indescribable about the look and feel of this game that is instantly familar and comforting - the closest comparison I can make is somewhere between the original Fallout and Yoda Stories...you'll know it when you see it. Darkwood captures a particular '90s PC game' aesthetic that just makes me feel right at home.

The gameplay loop is perhaps a bit redundant but nevertheless deeply satisfying. The devs state early on that 'you will not be led by the hand' and they really mean it. Despite a few frustrating moments of now knowing exactly where to go, I throughly enjoyed the cycle of exploring the map in the day and trying to survive the night. The standard survival mechanics of searching for items, trading, crafting, and inventory management are all present and well executed.

The game also strikes a nice balance (on standard difficulty, at least) of making the player feel afraid of the environment without being too unforgiving. For example, being killed by an enemy while far away from your camp is a nuisance, but you are not punished too severly: your items can still be claimed by returning to that location on your map anytime, even if you die again on the way there.

I should say a little bit more about the night survival aspect of the game, because it really is an experience to behold. I have yet to play another game that captures such a feeling of total vulnerability and fear. The first few nights in particular were blissfully terrifying, as I huddled by my source of light, hoping that the dresser I pushed against the door would hold back whatever was making those footsteps just outside the window... This part of the game is worth the price of admission alone. The suspense that builds as different night time encounters unfold is expertly crafted and unlike anything I've experienced.

I found the overall narrative of Darkwood to be rather obtuse, but I nevertheless really enjoyed the character interactions and side quests I encountered. The real pleasure of this game, for me, comes from the satisfaction of survival and the remarkable atmosphere that is present throughout. If those are things you enjoy, I am confident you will find much to love about Darkwood.
