When I want a gentleman's quarrel, you better pony up and give me one, you hobo.

Recently, I had the extreme pleasure of witnessing a Czech written and played comic opera by Jaromir Weinberger named "Schwanda der Dudelsackpfeifer", and you must admit that's pretty funny and the opera hasn't even started yet. Dudelsackpfeifer means bagpipe player, and if you've ever heard a Czech peasant trying to play the bagpipes then you know the opera is getting funnier all the time. Our hero Schwanda, is the best dudelsackpfeifer in all of Bohemia (at least that's what it said in the program notes. The composer , Weinberger never lets him dudel one single sackpfeif in the whole opera). The opera climaxes with him one day paying a visit to Queen Iceheart, who warms up to him immediately. Soon he's playing her such a lively polka that her heart simply melts with joy. Just then, Schwanda's wife comes in and sees the big puddle. She's terribly jealous, but Schwanda denies everything. "May the Devil take me on the spot if the Queen so much as kissed me," he says. So, the next scene takes place in Hell. It's a pretty hot scene too, with Schwanda winning his soul back from the Devil in a poker game, and setting all the little devils to furious dancing with a fiendish fugue.
Today, however, when you hear polka and fugue from Schwanda, it's almost always played by a dudelsackpfeiferless orchestra, which goes to show what a sad state contemporary opera is in.
