I will update this review when finished, but so far after completing World 1 I feel like they fixed everything that was a bit more meh in Yooka Laylee and added a lot of content. Exploration is incredibly rewarding and controls are much tighter, and all challenges that were somewhat frustrating have been revamped and are super fun (even Kartos feels like a much better experience).

Where YL was a pretty decent attempt at reviving BK, this is a very polished take on what the formula would feel with modern design (and I don't mean modern as in AAA, modern indie platformers are also much tighter than retro ones).

Update : So after completing the game 100%, basically all the game is like that. The fact that world exploration is so much more fun really makes them that much more fun to traverse. The only thing I could really fault the game for is its excessive accessibility (to the point it's not really accessibility anymore at times). The pagie requirement for the final boss is dubiously low and the streamlining of some pagies mean some are basically cookie crumb for even just walking around the world. But other than that the sequel has much better foundations to work with because they clearly understand how to reward exploration and make modern 3D platforming fun, so I can't wait for it.

Amazing throwback to some of the best 3D platformers with a modern touch. It's in the vein of games like Pseudoregalia or even Corn Kidz 64. If you liked those, don't hesitate !

Possibly one of the best gameplay-centric FPS campaigns ever. Don't care much for the MP but hey, based on Doom 2016, that's not why you should be here anyway !

Everything comes together to make combat an absolute masterpiece. Little by little you will learn to use every tool you have, and when you mastered it, it's an extremely rewarding experience ! It took me around 2 months and a half to play it as much as I played Doom 2016 all-time simply because of the sheer replayability. As soon as you can use every tools and weapons no fight will unfold the same way twice.

Time to make it GOTY !

Early Access Review
Everyone who would consider buiying that game, PLEASE DON'T. This is not a bad review. The game is far from bad. It's actually amazing ! The concept is novel and super fun. Sadly enough though, the developer of this game passed away. It is detailed in the following link that he was the developer of this game and how he died : https://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/253787/Obituary_Game_developer_Stewart_Hogarth.php

Unfortunately despite many attempts, Steam refuses to consider putting up that information in at least the news feed of the game, and at best in a banner over the Purchase banner on the page of the game. I think it would give closure to those who are still hoping any update from that game as it seems the company didn't have the heart to put someone else on the project or do the announcement themselves !

Amazing roguelike, and I dare say roguelike because the game has very little in the way of meta-progression, which is a good thing in that case. The only meta-progression is the unlocking of other frames/mechs with different abilities, starting weapons/loadout but most of which are balanced similarly.

It's IMO right up there with Heat Signature but in a more action-y way, less sandbox-y when it comes to missions. But still the amount of ways you can tackle a ship is huge. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good, fair rogue-like with a decent amount of replayability.

Also don't mind my playtime, the reason I've already finished it is I had finished it on GOG first. But it only reinforces my argument about fairness. I knew what I was doing so I was able to finish a campaign playthrough within 4 hours of play.

UPDATE : So for some reason I hadn't tried the Rogue mode during my first playing years ago. Big mistake on my part. For anyone tired of rogue-lites (I'm not of those but I know many who hate roguelites and want more classic rogue like experiences) this mode is just that. No preparation, no money, everything has to be done and found on the go. You have to be careful with your ammo and pick up new weapons when you're low on ammo, using stations is now free since you have no money. You also have to find usables on the go that will replace the ones you have. And all of these things are all one use. They don't get reloaded once you go to a new ship, even the weapons. To avoid being blocked you can also open locked doors by inputting a combination of arrows (at least for the keyboard, I don't know what is used on controllers) now.

An amazing, innovative top-down twin-stick shooter with a HUGE amount of content. Everyone should give it a go ! Even those who are not all that much into twin-stick shooter ;)

DISCLAIMER : I actually have around 10 hours of play in this version, some went unrecorded for whatever reason. Sure 10 hours is not huge but I think it gave me a good enough look at the game !

Well ! I'll be honest the current progression system could work. Really it could be a decently fun game. I won't go as much in length here as I did it over Reddit and the Steam forums so I think that's enough. Just look my posts up on the Steam discussion forums ;)

The thing is, getting ripped of your progression when you move to a new region is a terrible feeling. An equipment nerf I could get behind, making legendaries as worthless as whites is a bit harsh. That's the main issue here though. You also lose your transportation utilities. That basically means island biomes are a huge hassle for the moment being since you first need to find the boat WITHIN the biome to actually use the boat (the same goes for the glider, and special door opening items like the bell). Reloving those 2 aspects and making the combat more balanced would already make the game worth playing for me personally ! By balancing I mean reducing the huge gap there is when trying to take on enemies with a better rarity than your equipment. You should be able, with some sweat, a long fight, and good preparation, be able to take on overworld bosses of a rarity one rank higher than you equipment's. With some class and in multiplayer it's definitely doable, as a solo player not so much (or at least, not without cheaping your way through it).
Edit : Yeah by the way there is "+" gear in the game that apparently starts spawning once you get 100% of lore in a region. This "+" gear doesn't get nerfed when changing regions. To me it doesn't fix the system, if anything it makes it worse. Why ? Because it renders the new progression system meaningless. If you manage to get a full "+" gear set for your characters, you'll just go in a new region, able to just kill anything. A levelling or gear-based system could make everything gradually more powerful preventing that, but with the current system and a full "+" gear there's just no progression (though from what I've heard they have some limitations, like multiple regions form kingdoms and "+" items are also worthless out of kingdoms, the long and short is that it apparently only keeps its effect among multiple regions but is still limited).

Beyond that, if I had to pick, I'd much rather go back to what the game was in 2017. (for more details about what I mean go here https://www.reddit.com/r/CubeWorld/comments/d9k0nz/thoughts_about_twitter_feeds_and_so_on/) For some reason, the new mechanics have made Wollay remove a pretty huge chunk and probably hundreds to thousands of man-hours in the process. That is pretty sad when you stop a second to consider what said content was. We get what is considered by most an inferior progression system, all the while losing everything that made the Cube World world an amazing one and one people were hyped to go in. A world of random quests, with many quest types, not all of which required going to the location and fetching an item or killing enemies but sometimes a bit more than that, quests that you'd either randomly find or vaguely be told the location about by NPC. Quests you could track with a journal system that was actually implemented. A world where you wondered what was around the next corner. A world where each area had its own unique questline alongside the side quests I mentioned. A world with at least 2 other biomes (imperial city and mountains) and better generated city and buildings. While I can get people are having fun with the current version, I think most would still have fun and maybe have more fun with what already was there in 2017.

This is the result of a broken promise, a promise of regular updates where people would have respectfully barged in to give their opinion and feedback instead of the sad current situation where toxic players are overflowing the legitimate concerns and issues some people have. Hopefully Wollay sees that a huge amount of the people who disagree are actually respectful toward him and his wife and fixes at least a couple of important things, as well as add a lot of those missing features.

In the meantime I can't recommend the game for one simple reason : even if Wollay keeps the current progression system, he needs to at least implement the fixes I mentioned early in that review before the game is actually worth playing in my eyes !

Why didn't they do that with Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition ? At least if I want to play Darksiders Warmastered Edition I don't need a 1080 with and I7 Extreme and a SSD ! That's a remaster done right. More beautiful, less buggy, up to date. Amazing !

Here goes hoping they can update DS2 Deathinitive with the game engine of the Warmastered Edition
