Yes, you can find paint buckets occasionally in the game world and using them on walls gives you the option to leave messages which people on your friends list can see in their games (you can also see the messages they leave, and you can track their progress that way, back when the game launched, there were quite a few of us playing it and it was lots of fun reading each other's messages).

The things you can write are predefined, so you cannot write what you want, but there is a small free game called "Sigils of Elohim" and by playing it you can unlock more stuff to write as well as stars and other stuff. It's such a cool feature and it fits perfectly with general theme of the game, it really enhances the feeling that you are part of a collective effort trying to figure out what the whole thing is.
