This is an OK game. I tried it long ago and I tried it again now.
But its as basic as it gets. I like it just fine enough.

Environments and background foliage are really pretty, but the buildings don't look varied or unique enough from each other. Its also all thrown at you in a veeery basic set of tutorial levels.
The menu and UI elements are somehow just outdated for even a 2017 release.
The game also has this really weird "blurry" filter.

If you have a colony building itch, there are just too many better alternatives out there.
But if this setting looks interesting and youre not looking for anything extraordinary, it'll do just fine.
I'd first recommend Surviving Mars and Before We Leave.

Super Excited to see where this goes at Full Release.

The game has a good balance of early game survival mechanics, with late game production chains.
It uses the beavers as a measure of your progress with their happiness as you add more and more amenities and foods to the available reserves.
Vertical building is super unique and challenging with the stairs limitation and entrances being above for some buildings. Where at first I wanted a wide open map, I now want to go to a smaller map to see how it plays.

However, Its missing a few key features before it can be as easy to play as its competitors.
We do not have any resource graphs or monitoring aside from a live counter, so Im always wondering if a new change in my district is trending anything down or up. The beavers clearly prioritize certain foods above the rest, but you don't notice it until the blueberry storage stays full for multiple seasons.
The game also really needs help when it comes to building at scale, like clicking an existing building to go into build mode so you can place the same again while copying its settings.
Little QoL things like that are sorely missed.

The biggest issue however is that its missing a good tutorial that covers more than just your starting home.
The game has very "in depth" water mechanics that you realize actually goes quite deep. (sorry)
Districts that can be established in remote regions for more efficient work and you can make it easier with district crossings.
A lot of "Badwater" harvesting content comes up late game.
And it all just gets thrown at you immediately all at once on a craft menu that doesnt hide anything as you launch the game. So you will be overwhelmed at first and thats what stopped me from getting deeper into the game when I first checked it out years ago.
A good "story" style guide that introduces you to all the mechanics throughout the game would make it so much more enjoyable and easy to get into.

This game is the definition of "Labor of Love", oozing QoL at every corner.
Almost anything you can think of while playing to make your life easier, theyve added to the game.
No paid DLC's, intuitively designed building, customization and a self-paced learning curve.
Long after its early access (I played 250hrs back when), the game came out 1.0 and is STILL receiving major updates like 1.1

The game is basically a sandbox experience, but guided by exploration and a mission with hints of a story forming.
What this balance does is that youre not entirely aimless like in most sandboxes, it plays a lot more like an open ended single player story than something like Garry's Mod.
The only drawback preventing Satisfactory from exploding in popularity is that its not in a mass market Genre. Factory building, resource management, critical thinking, creative designs, all can be done in Satisfactory, but a "Factory" is not an appealing game concept for most people.

Won't stop me from recommending this game however, its an absolute unit built with genuine thought and care similar to Witcher 3 or GTA V

Actually really fun. There is more distance planning that you'd think at first.
But good spacing of housing and jobs to form micro settlements around combined with using the Overview menu to re-assign workers by distance can solve that.

Game is fun & simple and an easy recommend on a discount.
Wish there was a longer progression chart using upgrades and a deeper research/perk tree.
Resources being spread out is a pain point that the in-game transport systems dont really aid much with.
Universal storage yards might work out better
