Beneath the pale, flickering light of a buzzing streetlamp, the alleyway exhaled a sour, metallic stench, as though it had been holding its breath for centuries. Shadows writhed against the cracked brick walls, their shapes defying the logic of the bodies that cast them, twisting and clawing like creatures desperate to escape their two-dimensional prison. A faint, wet sound echoed—slap, squelch, slap—as if something soft and fleshy was dragging itself closer, hidden just out of sight. The air thickened, not with fog, but with a palpable sense of wrongness, a whispering static that tickled the back of your brain. And just as you began to convince yourself it was your imagination, the shadows froze—and one turned its head. But shadows aren’t supposed to have eyes, are they?
