Early Access Review
Valheim: Prepare to Die Edition

I'll start by saying that I loved playing through this game with my friends.

Going through the base game is fun. Skill progression and base building elements hold your interest for a while. But the "Early-Access" feeling rides shotgun the whole game. Poor optimization really starts showing once you've settled down and upgraded your first Green Top™. Despite being a neat little niche, the smoke mechanic chews through any hardware you dare install this game on. The pixelated graphics may need some getting used to, but there are some moments where the scenery and landscape simply look gorgeous.

The difficulty curve and combat play well together. There's the Terraria feeling where player becomes the underdog after every boss kill, pushing you to explore and improve your equipment to even stand a chance in the new zones. (don't ever go to plains early, if you hear buzzing, it's already too late.)

However, despite the good sides, once you've gone through all of the zones, it's game over, for a while. Don't expect regular updates or new content in your playthrough, at least not in a 6 month period. You'll most likely be done by the time they start teasing out whatever would come out next month, next year or the near future, probably.

On that part, the Dev Team bring a new meaning to "Taking it Slow" by releasing small patches that mostly add and remove seasonal furnitures. Actual bigger content updates require 12 months of teaser images first.

There are interesting mods to delve through if you're that invested in the game. But if you don't backup your savefiles per new content, you might end up corrupting your world. Stay safe then sorry.

As with the new "biomes" in those bigger content updates, players are kindly asked to explore them in a new world, as exploring these zones before their "official release" leaves them in a blank, empty state. You might still get lucky and find them unexplored on your older worlds. Still, the intended way is to start over. This is also where the modding community shines.

But who knows, you might get a public beta just in time to snatch your Labor of Love vote.

TLDR; You can harpoon your friends and forcefully drag them behind you when they're too encumbered to walk.

10/10 Best viking themed Tow-truck simulator in the market.
