Honestly this is so much more than cultural appropriation. By using prominent facial features and speech patterns of Squidward, Spongebob and Patrick turn themselves into caricatures of Squidward and participate in Squidface. They participate in Squidface while Squidward is trying to sell his house and escape the continual toxicity and hatred he faces in Bikini Bottom for being a QSoC (queer squid of color). Their Squidface is effective as it puts Squidward in a negative light and prevents him from being able to sell his house which is what Spongebob and Patrick wanted all along. Spongebob and Patrick, though FoC (fish of color), are white passing and in an attempt to fit into a society that is aggressively pro-white, rejected their nonwhite cultures growing up. However, by doing so they became self-hating adults that root for the misfortune of the FoC community, specifically Squidward, in a misguide belief that it will help them assimilate better into white society.
