This looks like a really fun twin stick shooter in the trailer, but the actual game is not quite as portrayed and feels half finished.
The main problem though is lack of controller support. A game like this really needs full controller support. Currently the steam overlay just maps the right stick to the mouse cursor, which is unplayable on controller and steam deck.
Edit - it looks like they're in the process of fixing things. I can't wait to play the next update.

Early Access Review
The game looks like a really fun twin stick shooter, and I was really looking forward to playing it, but in it's current state I can't recommend it.

There are cosmetic issues like characters playing running animation when standing still, that look really odd in a game that seems to have pro voice acting. (Update - this has been fixed now)

But the main problem is controller support. It is simply not there. They're using Steam to turn controller input into mouse/keyboard, so the right stick controls cursor position and not direction. This makes it unplayable with a controller. I haven't tested Steam Deck yet but it's probably the same there.

I really hope the devs fix this. It's also not difficult to do. even without direct controller support you could normalise the player to cursor vector (in controller mode) by dividing by its distance to get a constant unit vector that would always point in the right direction at the same distance.

I've just discovered this gem and I love it.
But why, god, why, does this game not work on Steam Deck?
Also, why the hell has Steam never recommended this game to me? I only heard about it by reading another review. I have so many hours in Dead Cells, Gungeon, Isaac, Neon Abyss, AK-Zolotl, and the algorithm is recommending total junk to me I wouldn't play for free, but not this game.
None of it makes sense.
Anyway developer... Ben? Please try and fix this if you can. I'm also a game developer, I know it's not trivial, but I would love to play this game on the move, Also if there's anything I can do to get it running on the Steam Deck I would love to know.

I was already going to give this game the thumbs up before they added steam deck and controller support. Playing with mouse and keyboard on my PC wasn't ideal for me, but it worked, and I recommend people try out both because it was made for that originally.

It's now a lot more fun though, IMO. And games are very short, which suits the steam deck.

This is probably the most difficult game I can subject myself to. It's one shot, one kill, and you will die a lot.

A 20 second game is normal. Over a minute feels like an achievement.

All you do is shoot, dodge, reload and showdown, the showdown mechanic is great, you mark targets in bullet time, and then a spray of bullets takes them all out.

Very simple formula, and it makes for an incredibly original, incredibly difficult game, but one that is easy to come back to, and actually gets more fun when you get upset with it.

This has the potential to be an amazing game, but it needs more work. I really hope the developer is going to continue working on it.
It has a very unique look and feel, and a lovely atmosphere to it.
However, it is no fun to play with mouse and keyboard, it really needs controller support to keep it in line with others in the same genre.
The gameplay feels sluggish, though maybe that's the controls.
Would work better if it felt more like a run and gun game, which it is.
Not sure whats going on with the gun, but it currently points towards you.

According to the video and the customer reviews this is an awesome game.
But when I played it you could only move around, not aim or shoot or anything, so basically I downloaded what I thought was a twin stick shooter, but instead it's a casual, movey aroundy game, more at home on a touchscreen, something to do with your phone while trying to look cool at parties.

If that's something you're into, you will probably like this.

If not then don't make the same mistake as I did, and avoid.

Devs, If you turned this into a more interactive game and allow manual aiming and shooting it would be a lot more fun and appeal to gamers with a controller.

Early Access Review
This is an oldskool twin stick shooter, and despite being early access, feels very complete.

It reminds me a lot of the bitmap brothers' "The Chaos Engine" on the Amiga, although it's survival mode, not exploration.

I have to say it's probably the best £2 I've spent on Steam, and one of the best twin stick shooters I've played. The gameplay and upgrade mechanic is very well balanced and a lot of fun, and provides a lot of variety from game to game, with different upgrage choices potentiating your choice of gun and character.

My only gripe is the graphical style, I don't much care for it, though the only time this upsets the game is that some power-ups make it hard to see what's going on, for example the ghost bullets are big and slow and find myself avoiding them. but it's a small flaw in an otherwise great game.

The only other thing that bothers me is that nearly all of the characters start off with 3 or 4 hp, except one, who has 7.

Also, what's with the trees, can I kill them?

I would love to see a gameplay mode, (or even better, new character with 5 or 6 hp), that has a random upgrade each level, instead of stopping the game and selecting them, this would encourage the player to try out all the upgrade combos, and provide a more intense, uninterrupted game.

I've only survived the 20 minutes once so far, and I still have a lot of characters and runes to unlock.

Great game, highly recommended!

This game is an absolute masterpiece, everything that was good about Doom 2016 (which was itself a masterpiece) both visually and strategically, has been improved, without affecting the game's performance.
(I am reviewing the main campaign, not the multiplayer, I don't have a great connection)
Everything is bigger and better, with additional complexity only where it's absolutely needed.
What's incredible is that I could have said the same about DOOM VFR, despite it's bugs, and I am silently praying that this episode makes it to VR somehow, because if I miss one thing, it's the bullet time you get while teleporting or using the weapon wheel. Instead you get the Dash, and time dilation while jumping is one of the rune powers you can choose.

The weak points are few and far between, but I want to list them here because they stand out, and the developers might be reading.

1. Pinky. You kept the 2016 pinky, which looks like a Mario Boss, whereas Doom 3's pinky is one of the most terrifying and memorable looking DOOM creatures. The actual creature tactics are a great challenge, I just hate how it looks, it should either have been introduced as a different demon, which would work, or kept it's 2016 fighting style but it's DOOM 3 looks.

2. The all runes cheat code, I was really hoping I could activate more than three runes, instead of just unlocking them all. I badly want all four glory kill runes (quicker, further, longer, and speed boost) with the blood punch health to potentiate them all. If you want any ideas for the additional campaigns....

3. No BFG ammo, when you chainsaw demons? I get why, maybe have it drop from more difficult demons, or just rarely?

4. The platforming, I really think it was close to being a welcome addition, and my feelings thus far are mixed, it was the odd section where it wasn't clear what to do, not that it was difficult per se, which were frustrating for me. It did encourage more active, jumpy play, so on the whole thumbs up, it just happened to be a weak point because it wasn't perfect.

5. The pickup items seem like a relic of an older game now that there's so much resource management based around the different kill methods, it would have been braver to do away with them completely, and added to the aesthetic of the scenery, though I understand why they needed to be kept. How about an option to remove them, with more generous collection to balance things out?

6. Way too difficult on even the second skill setting. I am ashamed to have to play it on the easiest setting.

7. Why Arachnotron so early? then introduce it later in the same level? It also contributed to said difficulty level.

8. I do occasionally need the pistol and have to melee.

That's all I think...

I love how the game handles rewards and doesn't use ♥♥♥♥♥♥ micro-transactional DLC nonsense like so many games out there. I was happy to pay the high price for the season pass, and look forward to the additional campaigns, whilst having fun with the rewards themselves.

10/10, Keep up the good work!
