There isnt a movement penalty for holding different weapons as far as i'm aware, so the catfish jump should work regardless if you are holding a rifle, I only get it to work about 50% of the time so it might be a perspective thing where the rifle blocks your vision more and causes you to do it slightly differently. I hope this helps :-)
